The SeaKnight LUNA is a baitrunner spinning reel — a specialist reel type built for live bait, carp, and running sinker fishing where the fish needs to take line freely before the angler strikes and engages the main drag. It features a physical free spool switch on the body that instantly toggles between free-spool mode and full retrieve mode, a separate rear drag knob to control free-spool tension, and a front drag rated to 12KG/26LB for the fight. 9+1 ball bearing system, 5.5:1 gear ratio, CNC aluminium spool with red anodised trim. Available in 4000, 5000 and 6000 sizes.
The defining feature of the LUNA is its baitrunner (free spool) system, which consists of two separate components working together:
Free Spool Switch: a lever mounted on the reel body that physically disengages the main drag and allows the spool to spin freely under a separately controlled light tension. In free spool mode, a fish can pick up the bait and run with it without feeling resistance from the main drag — the critical moment in live bait and carp fishing where fish that feel resistance will drop the bait before the angler can strike. The switch is confirmed to “quickly switch front and rear brake system” with a single lever movement, allowing the angler to disengage the spool while waiting for a run and re-engage instantly when a fish takes.
Rear Drag Knob: a separate drag control at the rear of the reel that sets the free-spool tension independently of the main front drag. The rear drag is confirmed to “adjust the free spool loose or tight.” Setting the rear drag to very light tension means the fish can pull line off the spool with almost no resistance; setting it slightly tighter helps prevent the spool from over-running (backlash) when a fish makes a fast initial run. When the angler strikes and flips the bail, the main front drag takes over and the rear drag setting is bypassed — the main drag handles the full fight.
Front Drag: 3-disk carbon fibre drag system with a maximum rated drag of 12KG/26LB via the front drag knob. Carbon fibre drag washers provide smooth, consistent drag pressure across the drag range compared to felt or composite washers — important for maintaining constant pressure during a long run from a large carp or bream without sudden stick-slip that causes hooks to pull.
The LUNA carries 9 standard ball bearings plus 1 anti-reverse bearing for a total of 10 bearing points. The anti-reverse bearing prevents the handle from back-winding when the drag is engaged, providing an instant, crisp engagement on the strike. 9 ball bearings across the spool shaft, line roller, handle shaft, and pinion are confirmed in the specifications. More bearing points reduce friction at each rotating component; in practical terms this produces a smoother retrieve feel and reduces the mechanical wear on shaft contact points over the reel’s service life.
The internal gear images confirm a machined aluminium main gear with a brass helical worm shaft drive. The main gear is a large-diameter aluminium disc gear with precision-machined teeth that interface with the worm shaft; the worm shaft is brass, a deliberate material choice for this component. Brass is used for worm shafts in fishing reels because it is softer than the aluminium main gear — in a gear mesh, it is preferable for the smaller, more easily replaced component (the worm) to wear before the larger, more expensive main gear; brass wears predictably and smoothly without seizing against the aluminium gear teeth. The 5.5:1 gear ratio is produced by the ratio of main gear teeth to worm shaft rotation; at 5.5:1, one full turn of the handle produces 5.5 rotations of the spool, providing a balanced retrieve speed for bait fishing, surface presentations and medium-speed cranking.
The spool is CNC machined from aluminium with red anodised trim ring. CNC machining (rather than cast construction) produces tighter dimensional tolerances on the spool lip, line lay groove, and bearing housing — a precisely machined spool lip reduces line damage on the cast and improves line lay consistency. The aluminium construction is significantly lighter than a comparable-capacity graphite spool, reducing the rotational inertia of the spool and improving casting distance. The red anodised trim is cosmetic but the anodising process also hardens the aluminium surface, improving scratch and corrosion resistance on the spool lip.
The handle features a screw-in arm design with an oversized T-shape knob. The T-shape knob provides a larger grip surface than a standard round EVA knob, allowing the angler to maintain a firm grip during a powerful run without the handle knob rotating in the palm — round knobs rotate freely, which can reduce control during a hard fight. The screw-in arm attachment provides a more rigid handle-to-body connection than a fold-down system, eliminating handle flex under load.
