The Seaguar R18 Fluoro Limited is a 100% fluorocarbon line from Seaguar — the Japanese company that invented fluorocarbon fishing line — designed specifically for rock fishing and lure fishing applications where the line is used as both a leader and a light main line. The R18 designation references its rock fishing heritage. Unlike the Grand Max FX (a dedicated leader line on a 60m spool), the R18 Fluoro Limited comes on a 100m spool (80m for the #6 size) and is designed for situations where a longer length of fluorocarbon is needed — as a full main line on ultralight spin outfits, as a longer leader section for rock fishing, or as a combined leader-and-running-line setup on light overhead and fixed-spool rigs. Made in Japan. 12 sizes from #0.8 to #6, all $57.95.
R18 Fluoro Limited vs Grand Max FX — Which to Choose
Grand Max FX (60m) — premium dual-structure leader line for maximum knot strength and abrasion resistance; the reference leader for demanding inshore and offshore applications where leader performance is the priority
R18 Fluoro Limited (100m) — rock fishing and lure fishing specialist; longer spool for main line use and extended leader applications; suited to lighter rock fishing outfits and ultralight lure fishing where the full fluorocarbon main line is the desired setup
Key Properties
100% fluorocarbon — not fluorocarbon-coated — manufactured entirely from Seaguar’s PVDF fluorocarbon resin; the near-water refractive index, abrasion resistance and sinking properties are consistent from the surface to the core and do not degrade as the line is used, unlike fluorocarbon-coated monofilament where the coating wears off over time
Near-water refractive index — fluorocarbon’s refractive index is close to that of water, making the line significantly less visible to fish underwater than nylon monofilament; critical for clear-water rock fishing and lure fishing where line-shy species refuse presentations on visible leader
Sinking line — denser than water; sinks rather than floating on the surface, reducing wind and current bow in the line and keeping the presentation deeper in the water column
Abrasion resistance — fluorocarbon is harder than nylon monofilament and resists surface abrasion from reef, rock ledges and structure contact; important for rock fishing where the line repeatedly contacts rough surfaces during the fight
100m spool (80m for #6) — longer spool than a standard leader spool; provides full-length main line quantities for ultralight outfits or extended leader sections for rock fishing rigs
Made in Japan — manufactured in Japan to Seaguar’s production standards
Size Guide
#0.8 / #1 — ultralight finesse; bream and whiting on light lure outfits; suits PE #0.2–#0.4 braid or as full main line on ultralight fixed-spool setups
#1.2 / #1.5 / #1.75 — light estuary and rock fishing; bream, flathead and light snapper; general light lure fishing leader
#2 / #2.5 / #3 — medium inshore and rock fishing; snapper, trevally and light kingfish on lure outfits
#3.5 / #4 / #5 — heavier inshore and rock; larger snapper, kingfish and reef species from rock ledges and offshore boats
#6 — heavy rock fishing and inshore; large reef species from exposed rock platforms on heavy lure and bait rigs; 80m spool
