The Purelure NDVIA MAX is a specialist rod designed for ajing (horse mackerel micro lure fishing) and eging (squid jigging with EGI jigs) — two Japanese technique disciplines that require a tubular tip rod with a specific blend of lure control sensitivity and casting precision for light jigs and EGI in the 1.2–10g range. Eleven variants across spinning and casting configurations from 6’0″ to 8’6″ in Light, Medium Light and Medium power. $199.95–$219.95.

What Is Ajing

Ajing (アジング) is a Japanese light lure fishing technique targeting horse mackerel (aji / 鱔, also known as yellowtail scad or Australian herring in Australian waters) using very small soft lures, jig heads and mealworm-style plastics in the 0.5–3g range, typically on ultra-fine braid (PE #0.1–#0.3) and a long fluorocarbon leader. Ajing requires a rod with exceptional tip sensitivity to detect the extremely light bites characteristic of horse mackerel, which take soft plastics very gently and reject them quickly if they feel resistance. The technique is extremely popular in Japan and among Japanese-Australian anglers fishing harbours, jetties and estuaries for aji at night. A tubular tip rod is the standard choice for ajing — the hollow tubular tip transmits the subtle vibration of the lure’s action and the light touch of a bite directly to the angler’s hand with less damping than a solid tip of equivalent stiffness.

What Is Eging

Eging (エギング) is squid jigging using EGI jigs — the same technique as the EGI PRO squid jigs in the store. The rod is worked with a rhythmic rod-tip lift and drop, driving the EGI jig upward through the water column and then allowing it to flutter back down on a semi-slack line, with strikes occurring primarily on the fall. An eging rod needs a fast or extra-fast tip for loading and releasing the jig with each lift, combined with sufficient blank length for casting EGI jigs accurately to structure and for keeping the line clear of the water surface on the drop. The NDVIA MAX covers both ajing and eging applications in the one rod range.

Tubular Tip — vs Solid Tip

  • Tubular tip (NDVIA MAX) — hollow cross-section at the tip; more lively and responsive action; better at transmitting the vibration and movement of the lure through the tip to the angler; the tip loads and releases more fluidly under light jig weight, providing cleaner jig action on the lift; the standard choice for eging and ajing where lure action transmission and casting precision are the primary requirements
  • Solid tip (Zero) — solid cross-section at the tip; maximum bite detection sensitivity; tip bends under the slightest pressure and shows bites visually as well as tactilely; better in cold water or when fish are taking very softly; suited to finesse bait and lure presentations where the tip serves as a visual bite indicator as much as a casting tool
