Circle Hooks are designed around a fundamentally different hooking mechanism than J-hooks. The hook point curves inward toward the shank, which means the hook cannot penetrate when pulled straight from the front — instead, as the fish moves away with the bait and the line tightens, the hook rotates and the point catches in the corner of the fish’s mouth as it slides out. This produces two significant advantages over J-hooks: a higher proportion of corner-of-the-mouth hookups (the strongest, most secure position), and dramatically reduced gut-hooking because the inward-turned point cannot embed in soft tissue during the run. Circle hooks are the preferred choice for live bait, cut bait and soaking bait for snapper, tuna, cobia and large estuary species. High carbon steel. 120 hooks per pack across 9 sizes from #1/0 to #9/0.

How to Fish Circle Hooks

Circle hooks require a different technique to J-hooks. Do not strike (sweep the rod) when you feel a bite — this pulls the hook out of the fish’s mouth before it has a chance to rotate into position. Instead, reel down to take up slack and apply steady, continuous pressure. The hook will set itself in the corner of the mouth as the fish moves away and the line tightens. For rod-in-hand fishing, a slow, firm lift of the rod tip when the line tightens is the equivalent of the strike.

Key Features

  • Self-setting corner-of-mouth design — the inward-turned circle hook point rotates into the corner of the fish’s mouth as the fish moves away with the bait, producing a secure hookup without requiring a hard strike from the angler — ideal for rod-in-holder fishing, livebait soaking and when targeting species that mouth bait slowly before running
  • Reduced gut-hooking — the inward-curving point cannot embed in soft tissue during the fish’s initial run, dramatically reducing gut and deep hookups compared to J-hooks — important for catch-and-release fishing and for anglers who want to minimise bait-and-run hook losses
  • High carbon steel — high carbon steel construction for the strength and sharpness retention needed across the full size range from light #1/0 snapper rigs through to heavy #9/0 shark and large tuna rigs
  • Wide size range — nine sizes from #1/0 through to #9/0 cover the full range of saltwater and freshwater bait fishing applications in a single bulk pack of 120 hooks
  • 120 per pack — large pack quantity for extended bait fishing sessions, offshore trips and situations where hook replacement after fish is frequent

Size Selection Guide

  • #1/0 / #2/0 / #3/0 — snapper, bream, flathead and general inshore species on small to medium natural bait; prawns, pilchard pieces, squid strips
  • #4/0 / #5/0 / #6/0 — medium-large inshore and offshore species; snapper, kingfish, cobia, large bass and carp on whole pilchards, large squid strips and cut bait
  • #7/0 / #8/0 / #9/0 — large pelagic and demersal species; heavy tuna, large shark, marlin bait rigs on large whole baits and live fish
