How a Spinnerbait Works

A spinnerbait uses a wire frame bent at roughly 90°, with a weighted jig head and skirt on the lower arm and one or more spinning blades on the upper arm. The wire frame acts as a weed guard — the upper arm deflects vegetation and timber snags away from the hook on the lower arm, allowing the lure to be worked through cover that would snag a hard body lure or soft plastic on a standard jig head. As the lure is retrieved, the blade rotates and produces flash and vibration that triggers strikes from predatory fish.

Spinnerbaits are one of the most effective lures for Australian freshwater bass in and around heavy timber, submerged structure and weed edges, where the weed-deflecting wire frame allows fishing in areas that are otherwise unfishable with standard lures. They are also highly effective for barramundi in snag-heavy estuaries and for golden perch and Murray cod in freshwater impoundments.

Double Willow Leaf Blade

This spinnerbait uses two willow leaf blades rather than a single blade or a tandem Colorado-willow combination. Willow leaf blades are elongated and narrow, producing high flash and a tight, fast rotation at a lower water resistance than the wider Colorado blade. The characteristics of the double willow configuration:

• High flash — the elongated narrow blade profile creates a strong, repeating flash on each rotation that is visible at distance in clear to lightly stained water; effective when fish are visually targeting prey at speed
• Lower water resistance — the narrow willow profile creates less drag than a Colorado blade at equivalent retrieve speed, allowing faster retrieves and deeper running depths before the lure rises toward the surface
• Best in clear to lightly stained water — willow blades rely on flash more than vibration; most effective in water with visibility of 50cm or more where fish can see the blade flash at distance; in very turbid or dark water, a Colorado blade’s stronger thump and vibration outperforms willow flash
• Ball bearing clevis — the blade is attached to the wire frame via a clevis (a U-shaped clip) with a ball bearing; the ball bearing allows the blade to rotate freely at low retrieve speeds where a plain wire clevis creates enough friction to stall the blade rotation; the smooth-running bearing ensures the blade spins on the very first moment of the retrieve
