The 9KM DWLIFE Octopus Offset Hook Kit is a mixed-size pack of 1080# high carbon steel octopus hooks with a 5-degree offset point and wide hook gap. Available in 100, 120, 210 and 250 piece packs. Suited to bait fishing for snapper, tuna, grouper, bream and a wide range of saltwater and freshwater species. $21.95–$51.95.
1080# High Carbon Steel
The hooks in this kit are made from 1080-grade high carbon steel — a specific steel designation with a carbon content of approximately 0.80%. Higher carbon content produces a harder, more brittle steel that allows the hook wire to be drawn to a finer diameter at equivalent tensile strength compared to lower-carbon alternatives. The practical results for hook fishing:
Finer wire for equivalent strength — a finer wire diameter penetrates bait more cleanly (less tissue damage in live baits like prawns and pilchards) and penetrates the fish’s jaw tissue more easily on the hook-set under light drag
Higher tensile strength — the flat, reinforced hook body withstands the sudden lateral force of a large fish turning and running under heavy drag without bending open; a lower-grade steel hook of the same wire diameter would deform under the same load
Sharper point retention — harder steel holds a sharp point longer through repeated use on rock, shell and fish jaw contact than mild steel hooks that dull quickly
5-Degree Offset Point
The hook point is angled 5 degrees out of the hook plane — an offset that provides two advantages over an in-line (straight) hook point:
Improved hookup rate — the 5-degree offset causes the hook point to rotate and catch tissue on the first contact with the fish’s jaw, rather than requiring the angler to drive a straight point through the jaw with a firm strike; the manufacturer states a hookup improvement of up to 90% compared to standard J-hooks; this is a manufacturer claim and should be evaluated as such, but the directional advantage of an offset point over a straight J-hook in hookup rate is well established in bait fishing practice
Wide hook gap — the wide spacing between the hook point and shank accommodates thick baits (whole pilchard, half squid, large prawn) without the bait closing the gap and preventing hookup; a narrow-gap hook with the same offset performs poorly with large, thick baits because the bait fills the gap before the point can engage fish tissue
Octopus Hook Shape and Jaw-Hooking
The octopus hook style has a short shank with the hook point angled back toward the eye at roughly 90° (similar to a circle hook but with a shorter shank). This geometry causes the hook to catch at the corner or edge of the fish’s jaw rather than deeper in the throat — producing jaw hooks rather than gut hooks on most bites. Jaw-hooked fish have significantly higher survival rates after catch and release than gut-hooked fish, where the hook must be cut deep inside the body to remove. For catch-and-release fishing for snapper, bream and flathead, jaw-hooking is a meaningful ecological advantage over standard J-hooks that frequently gut-hook fish that take the bait deeply before the angler strikes.
Applications and Target Species
Snapper — medium to large sizes on whole pilchard, squid strip and cut fish bait on paternoster and running sinker rigs from boats and rock platforms
Bream — smaller sizes on prawn, worm and bread on running sinker rigs in estuaries and harbours
Tuna — larger sizes on whole pilchard and garfish for schooling tuna from boats; the 1080# steel strength is relevant for pelagic species that generate sudden high-load runs at hook-set
Grouper / Coral Trout — medium to large sizes on cut bait and whole fish for deep reef bottom fishing
Flathead — medium sizes on whole pilchard and prawn from estuary bottom rigs
General bait fishing — the mixed-size pack covers a wide size range for multi-species sessions without purchasing individual size packs
