EWG — Extra Wide Gap

EWG stands for Extra Wide Gap — the distance between the hook point and the hook shank is significantly wider than a standard offset worm hook of equivalent wire gauge. The wider gap serves a specific purpose in weedless soft plastic rigging:

• Tex-posed (weedless) rigging — in a Texas rig, the hook point is pushed into the soft plastic bait and the tip is buried just below the surface of the bait body, creating a weedless presentation; the hook point is exposed only when a fish strikes and compresses the bait; the extra wide gap means the hook point can travel further before it contacts the shank on the hookset, giving the point more clearance to penetrate through the bait and into the fish’s jaw; a standard narrow-gap hook tex-posed through the same bait can fail to set because the gap fills too quickly with bait material before the point reaches the fish
• Bulkier soft plastics — the EWG gap accommodates creature baits, crawfish imitations and bulkier paddle tail plastics that would close a standard offset hook’s gap entirely when rigged; the wider gap keeps the hook point accessible through thicker bait bodies

Offset Shank

The shank bends at an offset angle below the eye. The offset creates a kink in the plastic bait where the hook enters the head of the lure, locking the bait in position on the shank and preventing it from riding up under casting or retrieve pressure. Without an offset, soft plastic baits slide down the shank during repeated casts and must be repositioned constantly. The offset shank self-locks the bait head without additional retention hardware.

Screw-Lock Bait Keeper

A corkscrew wire keeper is mounted at the top of the shank, directly below the eye. To rig a soft plastic, thread the corkscrew into the nose of the bait before threading the hook through the body in the standard Texas rig orientation. The corkscrew anchors the nose of the bait to the shank, preventing the bait from pulling off under hard hook-sets, fish strikes, or when working the lure through heavy cover. Pre-moulded bait keepers and ribbed shanks can fail to hold bulky or heavily ribbed soft plastics; the screw-lock corkscrew provides a mechanical grip independent of the bait’s surface texture.

Moulded Lead Weight

A lead weight is moulded directly onto the hook shank. The weight serves three functions:

• Casting distance — a weightless Texas rig with only the hook and soft plastic is difficult to cast accurately on light and medium tackle; the shank weight adds mass that loads the rod and provides casting momentum without requiring a separate bullet sinker above the hook on the leader
• Sink rate control — the weight determines how fast the lure sinks on the drop and how quickly it returns to depth after a lift-and-drop retrieve; heavier weights sink faster and are suited to deeper water and faster currents; lighter weights sink slowly for shallow and finesse presentations
• Compact rig — the weight is on the hook shank rather than a separate sinker above the hook; the result is a single compact unit (hook + weight + bait) with no additional hardware between the leader and the lure; fewer components means fewer failure points and a cleaner, more natural presentation

High-Carbon Steel Construction

The hook is constructed from high-carbon steel wire with full-plate corrosion resistance coating. High-carbon steel provides approximately 20% higher tensile strength than standard carbon steel of equivalent wire diameter — the hook resists bending and straightening under the load of a large bass or flathead making a sudden run. Full-plate corrosion coating covers the entire hook surface including the point, barb and bend — preventing surface rust that dulls the point and weakens the wire over time in salt and brackish water environments. The needle point is sharp out of the packet and maintains its point through contact with rock and hard substrate on the retrieve.
