T-Wing System (TWS)

The T-Wing System is Daiwa’s proprietary line guide design for baitcasting reels, and it is the defining technology of the Tatula TW series. A conventional baitcasting reel uses a small, circular level-wind line guide; as line exits the spool during the cast, it passes through this circular aperture, which restricts the line’s natural spread off the spool and creates friction. The T-Wing System replaces the circular guide with a T-shaped opening:

• During the cast: the T-wing opens to a wide aperture; as the spool rotates at high RPM and line exits rapidly, the line spreads off the spool lip in a wide cone; the T-shaped opening accommodates this spread without the line contacting the guide edges, dramatically reducing friction at the guide during the cast and improving casting distance
• During the retrieve: the level-wind mechanism closes to the narrow vertical slot of the T, engaging the line and guiding it back onto the spool in even, level layers as it does in a conventional level-wind reel; line is laid onto the spool evenly across its width to prevent uneven build-up

The practical result of the TWS is reduced line friction at the guide during the cast compared to a conventional small circular level-wind aperture. This translates to longer casts with the same lure weight and less resistance at the guide that would otherwise limit the distance achievable on lighter lures.

Gear Ratio Guide

The Tatula TW 200 is available in three gear ratios to suit different lure fishing techniques:

• 6.3:1: the slowest retrieve rate and highest retrieve torque of the three options; suited to deep-diving crankbaits, heavy swimbaits and large spinnerbaits where the angler needs retrieve power to work the lure’s resistance through the retrieve; also suits deep jigging where a slower, more controlled retrieve is needed to maintain lure depth and action; the most forgiving ratio for learning baitcasting technique
• 7.3:1: the mid-range ratio and the most versatile; suits a wide range of lure types including soft plastics, medium hard bodies, jerkbaits and surface lures; fast enough for quick line pick-up between presentations and slow enough for lure control on slower techniques; the natural all-rounder choice for anglers who fish multiple techniques
• 8.4:1: the fastest retrieve rate; suited to techniques that require rapid line recovery — topwater walking lures where the angler works the lure tip-down with a fast retrieve and lifts the rod between strokes, frog fishing over surface vegetation where the angler needs to pick up slack line quickly after a strike, and skip-casting presentations in tight cover where fast line recovery keeps the lure moving away from structure after a strike; the highest ratio requires more handle torque per turn than the 6.3:1 and is best suited to lighter lure weights where the retrieve load is manageable

Left Hand vs Right Hand

The Tatula TW 200 is available in both left-hand retrieve (handle on the left side of the reel, the reel mounts with the handle to the left when the rod is held in the casting position) and right-hand retrieve. Right-hand retrieve is the conventional baitcasting configuration; left-hand retrieve allows right-handed anglers to cast with the right hand and retrieve without swapping the rod between hands, which is an efficiency advantage for high-frequency casting techniques.
