The SeaKnight WR4 Windrunner IV is an ultralight spinning reel built around a carbon fibre drag system, 9+1 coated stainless ball bearings, and an upgraded asymmetrical power rotor. The WR4 (“Windrunner IV”) sits above the SANGE in the SeaKnight range, adding a 3-disk carbon fibre drag stack, a dual guide pin winding system, alloy line guide, and a one-piece handle construction. Available in five sizes from 2000 to 5000 with an optional spare spool.
The WR4 uses what SeaKnight calls “Light & Power Technology” — an ultra-thin body design that removes material from non-structural sections of the frame, reducing overall reel weight while maintaining rigidity at load-bearing points. Confirmed weights from the product specifications: 177g (2000), 232g (2500), 237g (3000), 245g (4000), 268g (5000). The 2000 at 177g is notably light for a reel with a carbon fibre drag system and 9+1 bearings at this price point — the thin-wall body construction is the key factor. The CNC-machined aluminium spool is part of this system: aluminium is lighter than steel for the same spool volume, and CNC machining allows the spool walls to be thinned further than casting or forging permits without losing dimensional accuracy.
The WR4 uses 9 ball bearings plus 1 anti-reverse bearing, confirmed and labeled in the exploded bearing diagram image. The caption reads: “1–9: coating stainless ball bearings; 10: anti-reverse ball bearing.” The “coating stainless” designation means each ball bearing has an additional corrosion-resistant surface treatment applied over the stainless steel base material — a step above standard stainless bearings. The coating reduces micro-pitting from salt, mineral deposits and humidity that accumulates inside the bearing races over time. In practical terms, coated stainless bearings maintain their smooth, low-friction feel longer than uncoated stainless in wet or brackish conditions. The anti-reverse bearing (position 10 in the diagram) is a one-way roller bearing that locks the handle against backward rotation under fish pressure, eliminating the rattle and back-play that a pawl-style anti-reverse produces.
The drag stack image shows the WR4’s drag assembly fully exploded: three carbon fibre drag disks alternating with two stainless steel drag washers, plus a spring and the drag knob cap. The image caption confirms: “3 Disk Carbon Fiber Drag System and Micro Click Drag Setting Provide Powerful Drag Performance, up to 24lbs / 11kg.”
Carbon fibre drag disks have a higher coefficient of friction than felt or cork alternatives, which means more drag force can be generated from a smaller disk surface area — allowing the drag stack to be thinner and lighter while delivering the same or greater maximum drag. Carbon fibre is also more heat-resistant than felt: on a long run from a large fish, felt drag systems heat up and lose friction consistency, while carbon fibre maintains a more stable drag curve throughout the fight. The micro-click drag setting means the drag knob increments in audible, repeatable clicks rather than sliding freely — you can set a specific drag value in the field and return to it accurately.
Note: the original product description text references “28lbs / 13kg” in one location but the product’s own drag system image caption confirms “24lbs / 11kg.” The image is the more specific, hardware-verified source and is used here.
The WR4 uses the same upgraded asymmetrical rotor design as the SANGE — the two bail arms have different profiles rather than identical symmetric arms. SeaKnight claims a 30% strength increase over a standard symmetric rotor at equivalent weight. The asymmetrical design resists flex and distortion under sudden impact loads (hard strikes on an open bail, or a large fish accelerating rapidly against the drag). The rotor is also the primary rotating mass of a spinning reel — a lighter, stiffer rotor starts and stops faster, which improves sensitivity and response during lure presentations that require rapid direction changes.
The WR4 features a dual guide pin system combined with a “Super Level Loop System” for the oscillating spool. A standard spinning reel uses a single guide pin on the oscillating shaft to control spool travel. The dual guide pin system adds a second pin, which reduces lateral play in the spool oscillation and produces more consistent, parallel line lay across the full spool width. Even line lay matters for casting distance (uneven line creates friction as it comes off the spool) and for braid in particular (braid on an uneven lay can dig in under load and cause tangles or line breakage). The Super Level Loop system refers to the worm gear or cam drive that controls the oscillation rate — a tuned oscillation produces tighter, more uniform coils rather than the loose or crossed coils that a poorly timed oscillation creates.
The line roller (line guide) on the WR4 is an alloy construction rather than the standard ceramic or plastic. The product description specifies it as “durable heat-resistant alloy line guide, dissipates heat more efficiently.” On the retrieve, the line passes over the line roller at speed; with braided line, this contact point generates friction heat that can damage a plastic roller or groove a softer ceramic over time. An alloy roller is harder and more heat-conductive, dissipating the heat into the bail arm assembly rather than concentrating it at the contact point.
The WR4 handle is a one-piece structural design — the handle arm is a single machined component rather than an assembled multi-part arm. One-piece construction eliminates the joints and fasteners that can loosen under repeated load, maintaining the rigidity of the crank arm throughout the reel’s life. The handle knob is EVA foam (not PVC as on the ARCHER2 and SANGE) and is removable and replaceable — confirmed as “Screw-in Handle & Removable EVA Knob: for easy maintenance and buyers DIY.” EVA foam is softer and more comfortable during extended sessions than PVC; the removable design allows the knob to be swapped for aftermarket handles or replaced when worn.
The WR4 features a “Shields Drag Knob” design that improves waterproof and dustproof performance at the drag knob interface. The drag knob is the most common water ingress point on a front-drag spinning reel — the thread gap between the knob and the spool allows water and fine grit to enter the drag stack, degrading the carbon fibre disks and washers over time. The shields design seals this interface, keeping the drag stack clean and extending service intervals.
A spare spool is available as an optional add-on — it is not included with the standard reel. The spare spool dimensions differ slightly from the main spool (confirmed in the size chart image: spare spools have a wider internal width than the main spools, allowing more line capacity). If buying for multi-species fishing where you want to quickly swap between braid and mono, or between different line weights, select the “Reel and Spare Spool” option.
