The LEYDUN Ministre Jack is an 80mm / 14g sinking pencil lure built around a 5-fixed + 2-free-moving weighted transfer ball system, a Z-action zigzag retrieve, and an internal noise rattle. On the cast, the two free-moving balls slide to the tail, shifting the centre of gravity rearward for maximum casting distance. On the retrieve, the balls redistribute forward and the lure produces a walk-the-dog Z-action zigzag at or just below the surface. On the pause, the lure sinks. Available in 6 colour options.

Note: this listing is for the 80mm / 14g size only. The 105mm / 23g Ministre Jack is a separate listing.

5+2 Weighted Transfer Ball System — Far Casting

The product image is labeled: “Far Casting — Equip With Five Fix Balls And Two Free Moving Ball. During Casting, Center Of Gravity Is At Rear. Increase Casting Distance.”

The internal weight system is visible through the translucent body in the product information image: a row of balls positioned along the belly of the lure. Five of these balls are fixed in position; two are free to slide along an internal channel. The mechanism works as follows:

On the forward cast, the force of the throw pushes the two free balls rearward to the tail of the lure. This shifts the combined centre of gravity toward the rear of the body. A rear-weighted lure flies tail-first through the air, which is more aerodynamically stable than a nose-forward tumble — the lure tracks straight and cuts through wind resistance efficiently. The result is significantly longer casts compared to a fixed-weight lure of the same size and mass, particularly into a headwind.

On landing and at the start of the retrieve, the free balls slide forward toward the head as the lure decelerates. This repositions the centre of gravity toward the front of the body, which is the correct balance point for the Z-action zigzag retrieve — a front-biased centre of gravity helps the nose dart left and right in response to rod-tip twitches. The transition from cast-weight to retrieve-weight happens automatically as the lure enters the water.

Z-Action — Zigzag Retrieve

The far-casting image includes a diagram labeled “Z Action Good Attraction — New Concept Of Topwater Pencil,” showing the lure tracing a Z-shaped path with sharp directional changes at each end of the Z. The title image confirms the three core features: Streamline Body, Noise Attract, Z-Action.

The Z-action is the Ministre Jack’s primary retrieve mode — a modified walk-the-dog technique where the lure produces wider, more exaggerated directional changes than a standard left-right WTD walk. Each twitch of the rod tip causes the lure to dart hard in one direction, pause briefly, then dart back in the opposite direction on the next twitch. The Z-path — rather than a smooth sinusoidal WTD — mimics the erratic, panicked movement of a baitfish trying to escape a predator, which triggers aggressive reaction strikes from species like tailor, trevally, kingfish, barramundi and school mackerel.

The sinking classification means the lure will drop when the retrieve pauses. Work it with a continuous rod-tip twitch to keep it near the surface; allow longer pauses in deeper water to let it sink to a target depth before resuming the Z-action. This dual-zone capability — surface on constant retrieve, subsurface on pauses — makes the Ministre Jack effective across a wider depth range than a purely floating pencil.

Streamlined Body and Low Centre of Gravity

The streamlined stroke image is labeled: “Lower Center Of Gravity And Streamlined Bait Body For Longer Casting Distance.” The body is a slender, elongated pencil profile with a blunt nose tapering to a narrow tail — visible in the white (colour 03) product image. At 14g in 80mm, the Ministre Jack is relatively heavy for its body length compared to a standard surface pencil, which contributes to the casting weight and the sinking action on the pause. The low centre of gravity (belly-weighted via the internal ball system) also stabilises the lure in flight, reducing tumble and maintaining the tail-first casting attitude.

Noise Attract — Internal Rattle

The title image lists “Noise Attract” as one of the three core features (alongside Streamline Body and Z-Action). The internal ball system serves a dual purpose: the weighted transfer function described above, and a rattle. The two free-moving balls slide and collide within their channel during the retrieve, producing an irregular clicking or tapping sound that propagates through the water. Unlike a fixed-ball rattle, the irregular movement of the two free balls produces a variable, non-repeating sound pattern — closer to the sound of a live baitfish than a regular click-rate rattle. This is particularly effective in low-visibility conditions (dawn, dusk, choppy water, stained water) where predators rely more on sound and pressure waves than visual cues to locate prey.

Construction and Hook Specification

Confirmed from the product information image spec table:

  • Length: 80mm / 3.15in
  • Weight: 14g / 0.49oz
  • Action: Sinking
  • Hook: #8 treble (front belly + rear tail — two trebles total, confirmed in product images)
  • Body: Hard plastic, slender pencil profile, no lip
  • Eye: 3D red eye with yellow iris surround, recessed into head
  • Finish: Detailed scale printing with iridescent finish; 6 colour options including blue-green silver (01), green-gold (02), white (03), neon yellow (04), blue-grey (05), olive-gold (06)

Technique Notes

  • Cast as far as possible — the weighted transfer system rewards long casts; the further out you place the lure, the more water you cover on the retrieve
  • Allow the lure to land and settle for 1–2 seconds before beginning the retrieve, giving the free balls time to redistribute forward
  • For Z-action surface work: keep the rod tip low and twitch with a sharp, rhythmic left-right motion; take up slack between twitches with the reel
  • For subsurface: count the lure down to the target depth on the pause, then resume Z-action twitching
  • Vary pause length to find the depth and cadence the fish want — short pauses for surface action, longer pauses to work deeper
  • Fluorocarbon or monofilament leader 10–20lb depending on target species; heavier for GT and large kingfish

Target Species

The Ministre Jack’s 14g casting weight, Z-action, and sinking capability make it suited to: tailor, trevally, kingfish, Australian salmon, barramundi, GT, school mackerel, snook, sea bass, and any fast-water surface or near-surface predator. The 80mm body size matches common baitfish profiles (pilchards, whitebait, herring) targeted by these species.
