The LEYDUN Luminous Squid Jig Set is a horizontal egi-style squid jig with a wood shrimp ABS body, luminous coating and BKK prong hooks. Available in the 60-series and 70-series sizes in 5-packs, and as a 14-pack in the 60-series. Targets squid, cuttlefish and octopus in saltwater from rock, jetty, beach and boat. Multiple colour patterns available across the 5-pack variants.
Horizontal Swimming Posture — Egi Style
The LEYDUN jig is designed to swim and suspend horizontally, not vertically. This distinction determines where and how the jig fishes:
A horizontal jig suspends with its body parallel to the water surface when the retrieve pauses; this mimics the natural posture of a live shrimp resting in the water column, which is how squid, cuttlefish and octopus have learned to identify shrimp as prey; the horizontal jig’s sink rate is also controlled — the jig sinks tail-first at a slow, even rate during the pause phase of the retrieve, presenting the BKK hook crown to the squid as it approaches from behind and below
A vertical jig is designed for deep-drop fishing where the angler lowers the jig directly below the boat; for the standard Australian squid fishing scenarios — jetty, rock wall, reef edge and shallow bay — a horizontal jig fishes the mid-water and near-surface zone more effectively because it stays at the target depth throughout the pause rather than continuing to sink past it
Wood Shrimp Body Profile
The jig body is moulded in the wood shrimp profile — the standard egi body shape for squid fishing. The wood shrimp body has a tapered abdomen, rounded head and fan tail that produces a swimming profile squid associate with natural shrimp prey. The ABS construction maintains this profile rigidly through the retrieve, pause and sink cycle without the distortion that softer materials can develop under repeated casting and retrieval loads. ABS is also compression-resistant and anti-collision — the body retains its shape and surface finish after contact with rock, jetty structure and tackle box walls.
Luminous Coating — Night and Low-Light Fishing
The jig body carries a phosphorescent luminous coating that absorbs ambient or direct light and re-emits it as a glow underwater. To activate: hold the jig under a phone torch, UV light or direct sunlight for 15–30 seconds before casting. The jig glows in the water for several minutes per charge.
Luminous jigs are most effective in three scenarios that are central to Australian squid fishing:
Night jetty and rock wall fishing: squid are highly active at night in the lit zones under jetty and rock wall lights; a luminous jig in the shadow edges between lit and dark zones creates a sustained visual target that squid can locate and track; under jetty lights the water surface is lit but the mid-water zone where squid hunt can be in shadow — a luminous jig remains visible at depth where a non-luminous jig would be hard to see
Overcast and dawn/dusk conditions: in low ambient light, squid’s vision is adapted to detect faint contrast in the water column; a luminous jig’s glow provides a localised light source that creates high contrast against the dark water background, extending the jig’s effective visual range to squid in the surrounding water
Stained and coloured water: in estuaries and harbour environments where water clarity is reduced, the luminous glow travels further through the water column than reflected surface light; the glow is a self-generated signal rather than a reflected one, which makes it effective at depths and in conditions where conventional lure colours disappear
BKK Prong Hooks
The jig is fitted with BKK prong hooks. BKK is a dedicated hook manufacturer known for producing hooks to consistent sharpness specifications; the prong crown at the rear of the jig is the hook-up mechanism for squid — squid grab the jig body with their tentacles and are snagged by the prong crown as they hold the jig; BKK prongs penetrate the squid’s mantle reliably on the hook-set, reducing missed grabs. Generic squid jigs often use anonymous hook brands with inconsistent point sharpness; the BKK specification confirms the hook’s performance standard across all units in the set.
Size Series Guide
60-series: the smaller size; suited to estuaries, harbours, bays and jetty fishing where squid size is variable and smaller jigs in the 2.5–3.0 egi size range are used to match local squid species and conditions; the 60-series is typically the more versatile all-round choice for mixed squid populations in inshore environments; available as 5-packs (three colour pattern options) and as the 14-pack for a full colour selection
70-series: the larger size; suited to targeting larger squid species and individuals in open water, reef edges and deeper bay environments; the larger profile creates a more visible presentation at distance and is typically used when targeting larger arrow squid and Australian calamari over reef and weed edges; available as 5-packs in two colour patterns
5-Pack vs 14-Pack
The 5-pack variants offer a single series (60 or 70) in a specific colour pattern — suited to anglers who want to test the LEYDUN jig or supplement an existing jig selection with a specific colour. The 14-pack is the 60-series in a full multi-colour selection — suited to building a complete squid jig collection across the colour patterns that perform in different water clarity and light conditions in a single purchase.
