The SEASIR Contra Max is a heavy-duty saltwater spinning reel in five sizes (3000 to 8000) with a 20–25kg maximum drag rating, an 8-washer mixed-material drag stack, aluminium alloy body, stainless steel sealed bearings, zinc alloy and machined brass gear train, and a screw-in aluminium handle. Gear ratios: 5.1:1 (3000 and 4000) and 5.7:1 (5000, 6000 and 8000). 9+1 bearings. Weight: 273–420g. Designed for reef, rock, inshore and offshore saltwater fishing where high sustained drag and body rigidity under load are the primary requirements.
The Contra Max uses eight mixed-material drag washers in its drag stack. The source specification quantifies the advantage directly: 8 mixed-material washers produce 53% greater drag output than a conventional 6-washer stack at equivalent spring load. The mechanism is straightforward — more washer surfaces means more total friction area between the drag stack’s rotating and static components; increasing the number of friction interfaces at equal spring pressure increases the total drag force the stack generates before slipping.
Mixed-material washers — a combination of felt, carbon fibre or synthetic hybrid layers — maintain friction consistency under thermal load more reliably than pure felt washers. In a sustained, high-drag fish fight, the drag stack generates heat; pure felt washers can glaze and lose friction as temperature rises, producing a sudden drop in effective drag; mixed-material stacks retain friction through the thermal range of a fight because the harder material in the mix resists glazing. At the Contra Max’s 20–25kg drag ratings, where a large kingfish or reef snapper is running against maximum pressure, maintaining consistent drag through the fight — without sudden drops in drag output — is critical to landing the fish.
The Contra Max uses a full aluminium alloy body rather than the reinforced nylon construction used in lighter spinning reels. Under the high drag loads this reel is designed for, body rigidity is a practical requirement, not a cosmetic upgrade. When a large fish pulls against a tight drag, it generates lateral and rotational torque loads on the reel body — the load is transmitted from the line through the spool, the drag stack, the main shaft and into the body; a body that flexes under this load allows the rotor to shift slightly relative to the body, creating a bind between the rotor and the body that increases retrieve effort and can cause uneven line lay; an aluminium alloy body maintains its geometry under load, keeping the rotor, main shaft and gear train in alignment throughout the fight.
The Contra Max’s handle screws directly into the reel body rather than being secured by a handle bolt. The screw-in design threads the handle into the body’s internal thread, creating a rigid connection without the mechanical play that a bolt-secured handle can develop under repeated torque loads from heavy retrieve work. The embedded structure means the handle integrates flush with the body at the connection point — no gap, no handle rattle and no flex at the handle-to-body interface under load. The aluminium alloy material is lightweight, strong, wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant for sustained saltwater use.
The Contra Max uses stainless steel sealed bearings throughout. Sealed bearings carry rubber shields on both faces of the bearing race that block water and salt from entering the bearing’s rolling elements; this is different from an open stainless bearing in a waterproofed housing — in the Contra Max the corrosion protection operates at the bearing level as well as at the housing level. Combined with multiple sealing rubber rings at the housing penetration points, the reel’s waterproofing is layered: housing seals block water at the external interface; sealed bearings block water at the bearing-level interface. For rock fishing, surf and offshore boat use where the reel is regularly submerged or hit by breaking waves, layered waterproofing maintains bearing smoothness over the long term.
The main drive gear is zinc alloy die-cast; the pinion gear is machined from solid brass. The combination matches material and manufacturing process to each gear’s load role: the large main gear takes the torque loads of the drag system at relatively low RPM and zinc alloy die-casting is appropriate for its load and tolerance requirements; the small pinion takes the highest-velocity contact loads in the gear train at high RPM and machined brass achieves the tighter tolerances, harder tooth surfaces and better fatigue resistance that the pinion’s operating conditions require. Both materials have good corrosion resistance in saltwater environments.
After saltwater use, rinse the reel with fresh water (not high-pressure) and allow to dry before storage. Rinse the handle, spool and body to remove salt from external surfaces. The sealed bearings provide internal protection, but external salt accumulation on the body and spool seat should be removed to prevent corrosion at unsealed contact points.
