The SLARDAR BB’s dual-handle is its most distinctive feature and reflects its squid fishing purpose. In eging (squid jigging), the retrieve is not a steady wind — it is a repeated cycle of sharp rod tip lifts or jerks to dart the egi upward through the water column, followed by a controlled slack-line drop as the egi glides back down on its sink (this is when the majority of squid strikes occur), then a rapid retrieve of line before the next lift. This rhythm is repeated continuously throughout the session:
The SLARDAR BB has 9 ball bearings and 1 roller bearing. Nine ball bearings placed at the reel’s key rotation points — main shaft, rotor, handle knob(s), line roller, oscillation mechanism — support smooth, low-friction rotation at every moving contact surface in the reel. The dual main shaft bearings (as indicated by “Dual Main Ball Bearings” in the specifications) place two bearings on the main shaft rather than one, which is particularly effective at reducing main shaft wobble under the radial load of a fish pulling against the drag; a wobbling main shaft causes micro-misalignment of the gear mesh that produces roughness in the retrieve feel under load. The line roller bearing is specifically important for eging, where PE braid (the standard mainline for squid fishing) passes through the line roller at high speed on the rapid retrieve; a bearing line roller spins freely with the line rather than allowing the braid to slip against a static pin surface.
The SLARDAR BB uses a 3-disk carbon fibre drag stack rated to 8kg (17.64lb). Carbon fibre drag washers have a higher thermal tolerance than felt washers and a more consistent surface coefficient across a range of temperatures — when drag washers heat up under a sustained run, felt washers can change friction coefficient and produce drag spikes or drops; carbon fibre maintains a more consistent drag pressure regardless of temperature. Three washers in the stack provide more total contact surface area than a 1- or 2-washer system, which distributes the drag heat across three surfaces rather than concentrating it on one or two, maintaining drag consistency longer into a sustained fight. The micro-click drag adjustment allows fine incremental drag setting — each click of the drag knob produces a small, reproducible change in drag pressure rather than requiring the angler to estimate a smooth drag knob rotation.
The SLARDAR BB’s rotor is asymmetrically shaped — more material is placed at the structural load points (the bail arm mounting side and the primary stress concentrations during retrieve) and less material is removed from the non-load-bearing surfaces. A standard symmetrical rotor distributes mass evenly around the rotation axis regardless of where structural loads occur, resulting in more material than necessary at low-stress points and minimum material at high-stress points. The asymmetrical design places material where it contributes to structural strength rather than simply to symmetry, achieving a claimed 30% increase in rotor strength for the same or lower mass than a symmetrical equivalent. For a squid reel used in saltwater — where sudden squid strikes and rapid drag engagement are common — a stronger rotor is more resistant to the torsional loads of high-speed hooksets and the radial loads of a large fish fighting the reel.

The 3000 SLARDAR BB has a shallow spool profile, which suits the lighter PE braid line classes used in eging (typically PE #0.6–#1.0 for inshore squid). A shallow spool fills to the correct lip height with less line than a standard-depth spool, preventing the over-filling that causes braid to pile over the lip and tangle on the cast. The Super Level Winding System produces an even, parallel line lay across the full width of the spool on the retrieve. Even line lay is particularly important on a shallow spool reel: uneven winding causes the top layers of braid to dig into lower layers under drag load during a fish run, which produces drag spikes as the line temporarily binds before releasing; a level wind eliminates this.
The SLARDAR BB includes a fish-bite alarm — a mechanical clicker that activates when line is taken from the spool, producing an audible click. In squid fishing where the take during the egi’s sink is often felt rather than seen, the alarm provides an additional detection signal when the angler’s attention is momentarily elsewhere; it is also useful in multi-rod bait fishing situations where the reel is set down between retrieves.
