ABS — Daiwa’s Anti-Backlash System Spool

ABS (Anti-Backlash System) is a proprietary Daiwa spool lip geometry that addresses one of the most common causes of casting tangles on spinning reels. On a standard spool, the first few coils of line sitting at the top of the spool can catch on the edge of the spool lip as they leave during the cast, causing those coils to bunch and pull additional coils off the spool simultaneously — the result is a loose loop of line in the air that tightens into a tangle as the subsequent coils follow. The ABS spool lip uses a specific tapered profile rather than a straight edge: the taper guides each coil of line off the spool in a controlled, sequential order, preventing any single coil from catching and pulling ahead of the coils below it. The effect is a cleaner, more consistent line lay on the cast with a reduced frequency of cast tangles, particularly with lighter lines and braided PE line that has less inherent stiffness to self-separate from the spool.

Machined Aluminium Spool

The MISSION CS spool is machined aluminium rather than moulded graphite or pressed aluminium. A machined spool is manufactured by cutting the spool body from an aluminium billet, which produces tighter dimensional tolerances than a mould-injected or press-formed part. The two practical effects are:

• Dimensional accuracy: the spool’s outer diameter and lip geometry are more consistent than a moulded equivalent; consistent geometry means the ABS taper functions as designed across the full depth of the spool as line is stripped out during a fight
• Resistance to flex under drag pressure: when a large fish is pulling line against the drag, the spool body is under radial load from the line pressure; a machined aluminium spool is stiffer than graphite or pressed aluminium of equivalent wall thickness and resists the slight deformation that can cause drag to change feel mid-fight on lesser spools

5.3:1 Gear Ratio

The MISSION CS has a 5.3:1 gear ratio — the rotor completes 5.3 rotations for every single turn of the handle. This is a mid-speed ratio, positioned between slow power ratios (4.4:1–4.9:1) and fast retrieve ratios (6.0:1 and above). At 5.3:1 the reel provides a practical balance between retrieve speed (covering water efficiently on lure retrieves) and cranking torque (pulling line against drag load without the handle feeling heavy). For general spinning applications — soft plastics, small hard bodies, light surf fishing, estuary bait fishing — a 5.3:1 ratio is a versatile all-round choice that does not specialise in either speed or power at the cost of the other.

3+1 Ball Bearing System

The reel has 3 ball bearings and 1 roller bearing. The three ball bearings sit at key rotation points within the reel body (typically the main shaft, rotor and handle knob) and reduce rotational friction at those points, contributing to smooth retrieve feel. The roller bearing (the “+1”) is the anti-reverse roller bearing — a one-way clutch bearing on the main shaft that prevents the rotor from turning backwards when the anti-reverse is engaged. A roller bearing anti-reverse is more immediate and has less play than a ratchet-and-pawl anti-reverse mechanism, which produces a solid, no-backplay feel when a fish pulls the line against the drag.

Drag System — 2–6kg

The MISSION CS has a front drag (star drag on the spool face) rated from 2kg to 6kg depending on the series size. Front drag spinning reels distribute the drag washers across a larger surface area than rear drag reels, allowing smoother drag application and less heat build-up during a sustained run. The 2–6kg range covers light freshwater fishing up to general light saltwater applications — bream, whiting, light flathead and estuary species on the lighter end; snapper in the 2–3kg class and light kingfish on the upper end of the 4000 series.

Ambidextrous Handle

The handle can be fitted to either side of the reel body to suit left- or right-hand retrieve preference. The handle is not pre-installed — it is fitted by the user on the preferred side before first use by threading it into the appropriate side of the reel body.

• 2000 Series — the smallest size; suits PE #0.6–#1.0 or 4–6lb monofilament; bream and light estuary species, small soft plastics and surface lures on ultralight to light outfits; suited to 6–7ft rods rated PE #0.4–#1.0
• 2500 Series — a step up in spool capacity; suits PE #0.8–#1.2 or 6–8lb monofilament; general light bream and estuary fishing, flathead on light rigs, small lure fishing; the most versatile size for general estuary and light coastal applications
• 3000 Series — suits PE #1.0–#1.5 or 8–10lb monofilament; flathead, snapper in the 1–3kg class, light beach fishing, general coastal lure fishing; the transition size between light estuary and light offshore/beach applications
• 4000 Series — the largest size; suits PE #1.5–#2.5 or 10–15lb monofilament; beach, rock and light boat fishing for snapper, tailor and surface species; the highest drag rating in the range (up to 6kg) for larger target species
