The 9KM DWLIFE Cheburashka Sinker (also known as a cheb sinker or cheb weight) is a round cannonball lead sinker with a stainless steel snap-clip loop that allows the hook to swing completely freely from the sinker. Available in 8 weights from 2g to 12g in 10-piece packs. Suited to soft plastic finesse fishing for bream, estuary perch, Australian bass and flathead where the free-swinging hook action produces presentations that standard jig heads cannot replicate. $14.95–$21.95.
What Is a Cheburashka (Cheb) Sinker
The Cheburashka sinker originated in Russian lure fishing for perch and pike and has become a standard finesse rig component in European soft plastic fishing. The sinker’s defining feature is a stainless steel wire loop with a spring-loaded snap clip — the hook attaches to the clip by its eye, and the clip opens with finger pressure to release or swap the hook in seconds without retying.
The critical functional difference from a jig head is that the hook is not fixed to the sinker — it hangs and swings freely from the wire loop. On the drop and during the retrieve, the sinker falls on its own trajectory while the hook and soft plastic swing and flutter independently below it. This creates a more natural, erratic presentation than a jig head where the hook and sinker are one rigid unit that falls and moves together. The free-swinging hook also means the soft plastic can be held in a horizontal position on the pause while the sinker rests on the bottom — a posture that a standard jig head cannot achieve because the jig head’s weight always pulls the hook point down.
How to Use a Cheb Rig
Open the snap clip with your thumbnail and clip the hook eye onto the wire loop
Close the clip — the hook now hangs freely and swings in any direction
Rig the soft plastic on the hook (weedless Texas-style or exposed hook point depending on cover)
Attach the wire loop above the sinker to your main line or leader via a snap swivel or direct knot through the loop
Fish on a light lift-pause-drop retrieve — lift the rod tip to move the sinker, then pause; the soft plastic continues to move and swing after the sinker stops, triggering strikes on the pause
The cheb rig is particularly effective in the following scenarios where a standard jig head underperforms:
Very light weights — cheburashka sinkers in 2–3g allow extremely slow sink rates and subtle presentations that a 2g jig head cannot achieve cleanly; the heavy jig head nose on a standard jig drags the soft plastic nose-down, while the cheb sinker allows the plastic to sink horizontally
Hook-swap without retying — the snap clip means hook size and style can be changed instantly without cutting the leader; suited to targeting multiple species in one session where hook size needs to change between bream (small hooks) and flathead or bass (larger hooks)
Rocky and snag-heavy bottom — the round cannonball profile rolls and bounces over rocks more cleanly than a flat-sided sinker; the free-swinging hook also allows the hook to float up away from the bottom when the sinker contacts a rock, reducing snags compared to a jig head where the hook and sinker touch the bottom simultaneously
Weight Selection
2g – 3g — ultra-light; very slow sink for shallow estuary, harbour and rock platform fishing for bream and estuary perch in 0.5–2m depth; suits the lightest PE braid (#0.2–#0.4) and long fluorocarbon leaders
4g – 5g — light; general estuary finesse for bream and estuary perch in 1–3m depth; the most commonly used weights for Australian cheb rig fishing for bream
6g – 8g — medium; deeper estuary and rock platform fishing in 2–5m depth and moderate current; bass and flathead on heavier PE braid (#0.6–#0.8)
10g – 12g — heavy; deeper water and stronger current; boat-based finesse fishing in deeper channels and offshore reef edges; faster sink rate to maintain bottom contact in tidal flow
Construction
Sinker body — pure electrolytic lead; dense, smooth and round cannonball profile for fast, direct sink to the bottom; the round profile minimises surface area in contact with rocks and timber, reducing snag rate
Snap clip loop — stainless steel wire with a spring-loaded snap clip; smooth and burr-free to avoid line damage; opens with thumbnail pressure and holds the hook securely under load
