What Is a Chinu Hook
Chinu (チヌ) is the Japanese name for black bream — Acanthopagrus schlegelii — and the Chinu hook style was specifically developed in Japan for black bream fishing. The hook has a short shank, wide gap relative to hook size, and a forged flat shank for strength. The Chinu hook is the dominant hook style in Japanese-influenced finesse bream fishing and is widely used in Australian bream competition and recreational fishing on natural baits — it is one of the most established bream hook designs in estuary fishing.
Double Barbed Shank — The Baitholder Feature
The defining feature of a baitholder hook is the double barbed shank: two small backward-facing barbs cut into the hook shank above the bend. These shank barbs grip soft baits — worms, prawns, pilchard strips, bread and dough baits — and prevent them from sliding down the shank and bunching at the bend during the cast and on the retrieve. Without shank barbs, soft baits work free from the hook after a few casts or when cast under pressure, arriving at the fish as a bare hook.
