The SeaKnight Speedy SAW is a full-body seawater-proof spinning reel built for sustained saltwater use across 3000 to 6000 series. It features 10+1 anti-corrosive ball bearings, a 3-disk carbon fibre drag system rated to 11kg (24lb), a CNC machined aluminium one-piece handle, a beveled CNC aluminium spool, a dual guide pin oscillation system, and an asymmetrical rotor. Drag ratings: 9kg (3000), 10kg (4000), 11kg (5000/6000). Weight: 233–275g across the range. Ambidextrous, with left/right interchangeable handle.
The Speedy SAW’s primary designation is full-body seawater-proof — a more comprehensive sealing approach than the point-of-entry protection common in general-purpose spinning reels. Where a standard reel’s saltwater protection is limited to a rubber ring or washer at the main shaft entry, a full-body seawater-proof reel seals at multiple points across the reel body: the main shaft, body housing joints, and internal bearing cavities. The practical consequence:
The Speedy SAW has 10 ball bearings and 1 roller bearing, all rated anti-corrosive for saltwater use. Anti-corrosive bearings use stainless steel alloy for the bearing races and balls, and are double-shielded to prevent saltwater from reaching the raceway. Standard mild steel bearings begin to corrode within a single saltwater session if exposed to water; a corroded bearing develops surface pitting on the ball and raceway that produces roughness in the retrieve feel and, if left unchecked, seizes. Anti-corrosive stainless bearings maintain smooth rotation across extended saltwater use between services.
The Speedy SAW uses a 3-disk carbon fibre drag stack with a micro-click drag adjustment knob. Three carbon washers distribute the drag clamping force across three contact surfaces rather than one or two, reducing heat per surface on sustained fish runs and maintaining consistent drag pressure throughout the fight. Carbon fibre washers hold their friction coefficient across a temperature range that would cause felt washers to spike or drop; at 9–11kg maximum drag on a 6.2:1 reel, the drag system is rated to handle the full range of species the 3000–6000 size class encounters — from bream and flathead at low drag settings to kingfish and snapper at near-maximum settings. The micro-click adjustment provides fine, reproducible drag increments without requiring the angler to estimate a smooth drag knob rotation.
The Speedy SAW uses the same asymmetrical rotor design as the SLARDAR BB — material concentrated at the structural load points (bail arm mount, primary torsional stress zones during retrieve and hookset) and reduced at non-load-bearing surfaces. The claimed 30% strength increase relative to a symmetrical rotor of equivalent mass is achieved by placing material where it contributes to structural rigidity rather than distributing it symmetrically regardless of load distribution. At 6.2:1 on a 5000 or 6000 series reel fighting a large fish, the rotor is under significant torsional load during the fight and the hookset; a stronger rotor is more resistant to the flex that produces gear mesh misalignment and retrieve roughness under peak load.
The Speedy SAW uses a dual guide pin system to drive the spool oscillation during retrieve. In a standard spinning reel, a single guide pin engages a cam track on the spool shaft to move the spool up and down as the handle turns, distributing line across the spool width. A single pin has a small contact area with the cam track, which allows some lateral play in the spool movement; at high retrieve speeds (6.2:1 on a 5000 class reel produces rapid spool oscillation), this play can produce inconsistent line distribution across the spool width, particularly at the edges. A dual guide pin system adds a second pin that engages the cam track simultaneously, doubling the contact area and eliminating the lateral play. The result: more stable, consistent spool oscillation at all retrieve speeds and a more even line lay that reduces the pressure-point line embedding that causes drag spikes.
The handle arm is CNC machined from a single billet of aluminium — one-piece construction rather than an assembled arm and pivot components. The one-piece handle eliminates the assembly joint between the arm and the pivot shaft, which is the weakest point in a multi-piece handle; under the torsional load of cranking a large fish against heavy drag, a multi-piece handle’s assembly joint can loosen progressively, producing handle wobble that degrades retrieve feel and eventually allows the joint to fail. A one-piece machined handle maintains its geometry and rigidity under sustained load. The EVA knob provides grip in wet conditions.
The spool is CNC machined aluminium with a beveled (angled) spool lip. A standard spool has a perpendicular lip that braid must bend sharply over at the exit point on the cast; a beveled lip reduces the angle of the bend as the line leaves the spool, reducing both the friction at the exit point (contributing to casting distance) and the abrasion of the line at the spool lip contact point (extending line life at the critical point where the line contacts the reel on every cast). CNC machining ensures the spool is balanced — an unbalanced spool wobbles during retrieve, producing vibration in the reel body that is transmitted to the rod and hand.
The dual guide pin oscillation drives the Super Level Loop winding system, which produces a parallel, even line lay across the full spool width on the retrieve. Even line lay is critical on heavy braided lines at 3000–6000 class: under drag load during a fish run, an uneven line lay allows the top coils to embed into lower coils at the pressure points where the coils cross; when these embedded coils release as the run continues, they produce momentary drag spikes. A level lay distributes line evenly and prevents embedding, maintaining consistent drag pressure throughout the fight.
