The Purelure Yannic is a 135g ultralight carbon fibre spinning reel built for finesse lure fishing, light bream, trout and estuary perch applications where reel weight directly affects casting fatigue and rod balance on long sessions. At 135g the Yannic sits in the sub-150g weight class that separates genuine ultralight reels from standard spinning reels — a category where the difference is felt in the hand on every cast over a full day’s fishing rather than on a specification sheet. Four sizes from 800 to 2500. 6.2:1 gear ratio. $269.95.
Why 135g Matters
Reel weight becomes a fatigue factor on ultralight outfits primarily because of the leverage the reel exerts at the bottom of the rod. A heavier reel on a light rod shifts the balance point toward the reel seat, requiring the casting hand to support more weight on each cast and during the retrieve. On a typical 6–7 hour bream or trout session with hundreds of casts, a 30–40g difference in reel weight is the difference between arriving at the end of the session with a fresh casting arm or a fatigued one. At 135g, the Yannic is light enough to balance well on ultralight and light lure rods in the 1.8–2.1m range without tipping the balance toward the reel seat. The carbon fibre body and rotor are the primary reason for achieving this weight — carbon fibre has a significantly better strength-to-weight ratio than aluminium or graphite composites at the same structural thickness.
Internal Construction
Carbon fibre body and rotor — full carbon fibre construction achieves the 135g total reel weight while maintaining the structural rigidity needed to support the main gear and bearing system under load; the carbon rotor is the largest single contributor to rotating mass reduction, directly affecting the reel’s feel at the start of each retrieve
CNC machined aluminium bevelled spool — machined aluminium spool for precise tolerances and a smooth, consistent line lay; the bevelled profile promotes even line distribution across the full spool capacity
Hard aluminium alloy main shaft — the rocker structure on the main shaft translates handle rotation into rotor rotation; hard aluminium provides the rigidity needed to maintain alignment under the axial load of a running fish without flex that would affect drag consistency
Manganese brass spiral gear teeth — manganese brass is harder and more wear-resistant than standard brass; the spiral tooth profile on the main and pinion gears distributes tooth contact load across a wider surface area than straight-cut teeth, producing smoother power transmission and longer gear life under sustained retrieve load
Stainless steel gear spindle — stainless steel spindle maintains corrosion resistance and dimensional stability in saltwater environments
High strength zinc alloy drag discs — zinc alloy drag washers for consistent drag pressure across the adjustment range; double guide bar support maintains the drag stack alignment under load
Mechanical Features
Fly-reel drag locking mechanism — the drag lock system uses a mechanism similar to a fly reel’s palm drag, providing a positive lock feel at each drag setting rather than a continuously variable drag knob that can shift position during the fight; the large diameter drag knob allows precise adjustment mid-fight with gloved or wet hands
Teardrop shaped line guide pillar — the aerodynamic teardrop profile on the line roller support pillar reduces turbulence at the line roller and minimises line twist on the retrieve; important for ultralight PE braid which is more prone to twist and tangles than heavier lines
Anti-reverse (800 series specific note) — the anti-reverse mechanism (does not rotate with casting motion) is only available on the 800 series model; the 1000, 2000 and 2500 models do not include this feature — check your preferred size before purchasing if anti-reverse is required
Left and right hand convertible — the handle can be mounted on either side for left or right hand retrieve
Bail flip click — self-contained bail flip with an audible click on open and close for tactile confirmation without looking at the reel
Size Guide
800 Series — ultralight micro reel; match fishing, ultralight trout and small bream on 1–3lb line or PE #0.1–#0.3 braid; suits ultralight rods under 1.8m; anti-reverse feature included
1000 Series — light finesse; bream, estuary perch and small trout on 2–4lb line or PE #0.2–#0.4 braid; suits ultralight to light rods 1.8–2.0m
2000 Series — light general purpose; bream, flathead and bass on 4–6lb line or PE #0.4–#0.6 braid; the most versatile size in the range for general estuary lure fishing on light spin outfits
2500 Series — light-medium; flathead, snapper and trevally on 6–8lb line or PE #0.6–#0.8 braid; suits medium-light spin rods 2.0–2.4m
