The LEYDUN Fluorocarbon Leader Line is a 100% carbon fibre (fluorocarbon) monofilament leader in three line classes: 7LB/0.211mm (#1.5), 9LB/0.249mm (#2.0) and 12LB/0.288mm (#3.0). 100m spool. Sinking, level wound. Described as super soft for improved knot tying and reduced coil memory. Freshwater and saltwater. Suited to estuary and inshore leader applications.
Fluorocarbon — What “100% Carbon” Means
In fishing tackle, “100% carbon” and “carbon fibre fishing line” are common marketing terms for fluorocarbon monofilament — polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) polymer. The name refers to the carbon-fluorine bond structure of the PVDF molecule, not structural carbon fibre. The LEYDUN line is a monofilament leader material; it is flexible, knottable and suitable for all standard fishing leader connections.
Fluorocarbon has three properties that distinguish it from nylon monofilament for leader use:
Sinking: fluorocarbon’s density (approximately 1.78 g/cm³) is higher than water (1.0 g/cm³), so it sinks rather than floating; a sinking leader pulls the connection between the braid mainline and the lure down toward the target depth rather than floating at the surface and creating an angled, visible connection above the lure; for bottom-contact and mid-water techniques — soft plastics on the bottom, hard bodies in the mid-water column, slow-rolled swimbaits — a sinking leader keeps the lure at the intended depth throughout the retrieve
Near-invisibility in water: fluorocarbon’s refractive index (approximately 1.42) is closer to water’s refractive index (1.33) than nylon monofilament’s refractive index (approximately 1.53–1.57); the closer the refractive index of a material is to water, the less the light bends at the material’s surface when entering and exiting, and the less visible the material appears in the water column; fluorocarbon leader is the standard choice in clear-water Australian estuary fishing for bream and estuary perch specifically because these species are known to be leader-shy in pressured environments
Abrasion resistance: fluorocarbon is harder and more abrasion-resistant than nylon monofilament at equivalent diameter; relevant for fishing around oyster-covered structure, rock, reef edges and timber snags where the leader contacts the substrate
Super Soft Construction
Standard fluorocarbon is stiffer than nylon monofilament; the stiffness is a consequence of the PVDF polymer’s higher modulus compared to nylon. Stiffness in a leader has two practical drawbacks for light estuary fishing:
Stiff leader material retains the coil shape from the spool (coil memory); when tied to a lure and cast, a stiff leader with coil memory produces a curved leader between the lure and the mainline connection that reduces the lure’s swimming action and can create visible line coils near the lure that are visible to fish
Stiff material is harder to form neat, consistent knots in — the line resists the tight turns required for a Uni knot, improved clinch or FG knot and can spring open before the knot is cinched, leading to loose or inconsistent knots
The LEYDUN’s super soft designation indicates lower stiffness than a standard fluorocarbon at equivalent diameter. Softer fluorocarbon has lower coil memory, lies straighter after casting and is easier to form tight, consistent knots in, while retaining fluorocarbon’s sink rate, near-invisibility and abrasion resistance properties.
Line Class and Application Guide
#1.5 — 7LB / 0.211mm: the lightest leader class; suited to finesse bream, estuary perch and small bass in clear estuary water where leader visibility is a concern; pairs with PE #0.3–0.6 braid mainline on 1000–2000-size reels; 7LB is appropriate for light lure weights and smaller target species where break-strength is not the primary concern; FG knot for the braid-to-leader join is recommended at this class to maximise knot strength
#2.0 — 9LB / 0.249mm: the all-round estuary leader; the most widely applicable class for Australian estuary soft plastic and hard body fishing; suited to flathead, bream, trevally and light snapper; pairs with PE #0.6–0.8 braid and 2000–2500 reels; 9LB provides a useful safety margin on unexpected larger fish while remaining light enough for clear-water estuary presentation
#3.0 — 12LB / 0.288mm: the medium leader; suited to applications where larger fish are possible — solid estuary flathead, snapper and trevally in areas with structure; pairs with PE #0.8–1.0 braid and 2500–3000 reels; also suited to fishing around abrasive structure (rock, reef edge, oyster) where the extra diameter adds abrasion reserve
100m Spool
100m is a leader spool format — leader material is not spooled onto the reel but cut to length for each rig (typically 40–200cm of leader per connection); 100m provides enough material for many sessions depending on how frequently leaders are re-tied or replaced. The LEYDUN’s 100m length suits a full season of estuary fishing across the three application classes.
