The 9KM DWLIFE Drop Shot and Wacky Rig Hook is a black nickel high carbon steel hook designed for finesse soft plastic fishing techniques — specifically drop shot rigs and wacky rigs for Australian bass, bream and estuary perch. Seven hook sizes from #4 (smallest) to #3/0 (largest) in 50, 100 and 200 piece packs. Hook size gauge included with each pack. $14.95–$32.95.

Drop Shot Rigging — What It Is and How These Hooks Are Used

A drop shot rig suspends the soft plastic bait at a fixed, adjustable height above the bottom. The hook is tied directly to the main line (or leader) using a Palomar knot, leaving a tag end of line that runs down to a sinker below the hook. This inverts the standard sinker-above-hook arrangement — the sinker sits on the bottom and the bait floats above it at whatever distance the hook is positioned up the line, typically 20–60cm above the sinker for Australian estuary and freshwater fishing.

The drop shot hook is typically rigged weedless — the hook point is embedded into the soft plastic body and pushed back through to expose the tip, creating a semi-weedless presentation that resists snags on rocks and structure while remaining open enough to penetrate on the strike. The hook must have a specific geometry for this rig to work correctly: an offset or straight hook point, a wide enough gap for the soft plastic to sit correctly on the shank, and an eye angle that allows the hook to sit horizontal when tied on a Palomar knot (the eye faces upward at approximately 90° to the shank on a correctly designed drop shot hook). Drop shotting is extremely effective for Australian bass and bream in cold water and high-pressure conditions where active lure retrieves produce few bites — the stationary, hovering bait triggers strikes from fish that are tracking but not committing.

Wacky Rigging — What It Is and How These Hooks Are Used

A wacky rig hooks the soft plastic (typically a straight worm or stick bait) through the middle of the bait body rather than the head or tail. When retrieved with a twitch-and-pause action, both ends of the bait flap and wriggle independently, creating a highly erratic, struggling action that is difficult to replicate with any other rigging method. The wacky rig is most commonly used with a single hook through the centre of the bait on a weightless or lightly weighted setup for surface and near-surface presentations. The hook size must match the bait width at the hook point — too small and the hook gap is covered by the bait body, too large and the bait cannot move freely on both sides of the hook.

Black Nickel Finish

Black nickel plating on these hooks provides two advantages over standard bright nickel or tinned finishes. First, the dark, low-reflectance surface is less visible to fish in clear water — particularly relevant for drop shot and wacky rig techniques used in clear estuary and freshwater environments where fish can inspect the rig before committing. Second, black nickel has good corrosion resistance in both freshwater and light saltwater environments, extending the hook’s service life compared to bare steel or standard tinned hooks that rust quickly after saltwater exposure.

Hook Size Guide

Hook sizing uses two scales that meet at #1: sizes #2 through #6+ get larger as the number decreases (so #4 is smaller than #2), while sizes #1/0 through #5/0+ get larger as the number increases (so #3/0 is larger than #1/0). The available sizes in this pack range from #4 (smallest) to #3/0 (largest):

  • #4 — the smallest hook in the range; suits micro soft plastics and curl tails in the 1.5–2 inch range; bream and small estuary perch on very light finesse setups
  • #3 — small hook for 2–2.5 inch soft plastics; bream, small bass and whiting on light finesse rigs
  • #2 — medium-small hook for 2.5–3 inch soft plastics; the most commonly used size for bream drop shotting and wacky rigging on light to medium braid
  • #1 — medium hook for 3–3.5 inch soft plastics; general bream and bass drop shot; the mid-point between the small bream sizes and the larger bass sizes
  • #1/0 — medium-large hook for 3.5–4 inch soft plastics; Australian bass and larger bream on medium braid; the standard size for bass drop shotting on 3–4 inch paddle tail and finesse plastic baits
  • #2/0 — large hook for 4–5 inch soft plastics; larger bass, flathead and snapper on heavier drop shot setups in deeper water and stronger current
  • #3/0 — the largest hook in the range; 5 inch+ soft plastics for larger bass, flathead and estuary snapper on medium-heavy drop shot and wacky rigs in deeper offshore or estuary environments

Pack Guide

  • 50 piece — suitable for anglers who primarily fish one or two sizes; lower volume for targeted use
  • 100 piece — the most practical pack size for regular fishing; enough hooks for multiple sessions without excess stock
  • 200 piece — bulk pack for guides, frequent anglers and those who fish across multiple hook sizes per session; best value per hook
