What Is a Chatterbait

A chatterbait (also called a bladed jig or vibrating jig) is a weighted jig head with a blade attached above the hook on a split ring. On the retrieve, the blade deflects water and produces vibration and lateral movement that transmits through the jig body and skirt, causing the skirt strands to pulse and flutter with every rotation of the blade. Unlike a spinnerbait where the blade rotates independently on an upper arm, the chatterbait’s blade is directly connected to the jig head — the whole lure vibrates as a single unit on the retrieve rather than the blade spinning separately above a stationary jig head.

Chatterbaits are most effective on a steady medium-speed retrieve through grass edges, timber lines and weed edges, where the vibration triggers reaction strikes from bass and golden perch holding in or just outside the structure. They can also be slow-rolled along the bottom for Murray cod and larger predatory species.

• Pressured, clear water — in heavily fished impoundments and clear estuaries where fish have been caught and released repeatedly, the metal blade’s clacking sound can become associated with fishing pressure; pressured bass and golden perch in clear water often refuse metal blade lures while continuing to strike on silent or low-noise alternatives; the PVC blade’s vibration provides the same triggering stimulus without the metal noise signature
• Cold water and slow presentations — in cold water when fish are lethargic and slow retrieves are required, the PVC blade maintains vibration at lower retrieve speeds than a metal blade, which requires a minimum retrieve speed to achieve full deflection; effective for winter impoundment bass on slow, deep presentations

Integrated Weed Guard

A wire weed guard extends from the jig head to the hook point, deflecting vegetation, timber and debris away from the hook on the retrieve. The weed guard is designed to be stiff enough to deflect structure but flexible enough to compress and allow the hook to set on a fish’s strike. This allows the lure to be worked through the edges of grass flats, lily pads, submerged timber and weed lines that are otherwise unfishable with an exposed-hook lure — the exact structure zones where large bass and golden perch hold during the day in impoundments and river systems.

Silicone Skirt

The silicone skirt provides a large, pulsating profile that mimics a baitfish or yabby on the retrieve.
