What Are Assist Hooks

An assist hook is a short-cord hook rig that attaches to the top split ring or solid ring of a metal jig rather than to the body of the jig. Unlike treble hooks mounted on the jig body, assist hooks hang above or alongside the jig on a short length of cord and are positioned near the head of the jig — the area where predatory fish typically strike, aiming for the head of the baitfish the jig is imitating. Assist hooks offer three advantages over body-mounted treble hooks for jigging:

• Strike point alignment — predatory fish hit the head of the jig; a single or double assist hook positioned at the jig head catches fish that miss or hit short of body-mounted trebles
• Reduced body snagging — assist hooks are less likely to snag reef structure on the drop compared to treble hooks mounted along the jig body; critical in slow pitch jigging where the jig is worked close to the bottom and structure
• Better jig action — no weight from treble hooks mounted on the jig body means the jig falls and flutters with its intended action; trebles on the body add drag and change the jig’s fall attitude

Steel Wire-Reinforced Assist Cord

The assist cord on these hooks uses multi-strand braided line with a steel wire running inside the braid. This is a meaningful upgrade over standard Kevlar-cord or plain braid assist hooks:

• Tooth resistance — kingfish, amberjack, samson fish and tuna all have abrasive mouths and sharp gill plates; during the fight, the assist cord is in direct contact with the fish’s mouth and jaw; plain braid cord can be abraded or cut at this contact point, causing hook failure mid-fight; the internal steel wire cannot be cut by fish teeth or abraded through by jaw contact, maintaining cord integrity throughout the fight
• Hook point abrasion — during the retrieve and on the drop, the hook point can contact the assist cord; a steel wire inside the braid prevents the hook point from working through the cord over repeated retrieves
• Superior to Kevlar — the manufacturer explicitly notes this cord is more durable than Kevlar string hook alternatives; Kevlar is strong in tension but can be cut by sharp edges; steel wire resists both cutting and abrasion

Luminous Blue Feather Dressing

The hook is dressed with blue feather fibres that include luminous (glow-in-the-dark) fibres mixed through the dressing. The luminous fibres absorb UV light and emit a blue-green glow in the dark — effective for two specific scenarios:

• Deep water jigging — below approximately 30–40m, ambient light drops significantly; glow fibres emit light that remains visible to fish at depth where a plain dark hook with no dressing becomes invisible; the glow attracts attention and mimics the bioluminescence of small squid and deep-water crustaceans
• Night jigging — the luminous fibres are effective from the surface down at night; charge under a torch or headlamp before each drop for maximum glow duration on the fall

To activate the glow: hold the hook under direct sunlight or a strong torch/headlamp for 30–60 seconds before use.

Size Guide

Assist hook size should match the hook gap to the width of the jig head. The hook gap should be wide enough that the hook point extends beyond the jig body width — a hook that is too small has its gap closed by the jig width and cannot set. Sizes 10–20 in this range cover small to large metal jigs:

• Size 10–12 — small jigs (20–60g); light to medium jigging for smaller kingfish, snapper and reef species; estuary jigging for trevally and tailor

Rigging

Assist hooks attach to the solid ring at the head of the jig. Use one hook (single assist) for slow pitch jigging with light drag where the jig needs maximum freedom of movement, or two hooks rigged as a double assist pair for speed jigging and applications where hookup rate is prioritised over jig action. The solid ring connection is stronger and less prone to opening under load than a split ring, particularly when a large kingfish or GT makes a sudden lateral run at hook-set.
