The Tsuriken Neo Friction ISO V-Special is a Japanese-made nylon main line designed specifically for ISO rock fishing — the fixed-line float fishing technique (Iso-tsuri) practised from rock platforms and headlands using a long match-style rod, running float rig and nylon main line. ISO fishing requires a specific buoyancy profile that neither a fully floating line nor a fully sinking line can deliver, and the V-Special is built around exactly that profile. 150m and 200m spool lengths across five sizes from #1.5 to #5. All $38.95.

What Is ISO Rock Fishing

ISO fishing (Iso-tsuri / 磯釣り) is a style of fixed-line float fishing developed in Japan and widely practised by Japanese-Australian anglers from exposed rock platforms. The technique uses a long, soft-tipped rock fishing rod (typically 5–6m), a running float rig with a light main line, and natural bait — typically worms, krill or bread — drifted under the float in the current alongside rock structure. Target species include bream, drummer, luderick and sweep from rock platforms, with yellowfin bream and silver drummer being the primary targets in Australian waters. The technique demands a main line that is soft, supple and low-visibility at the rig, while remaining manageable and detectable at the rod tip through the float.

Semi-Floating Buoyancy — Why It Matters for ISO

ISO fishing requires a main line with a specific buoyancy characteristic: the body of the line should float or semi-float on the surface to remain manageable and visible for float monitoring, while the section near the rig should not introduce excessive resistance to the float drift. A fully floating line sits on the surface film and is pushed by wind and wave action, dragging the float off the natural drift. A fully sinking line creates a downward angle from the rod tip to the float that makes bite detection slow. The V-Special’s semi-floating design — with a sink-tip characteristic at the business end and a floating body — allows the float to drift naturally in the current while the main line remains on or near the surface for direct contact with the rod tip.

Key Features

  • Semi-floating nylon — sink tip, float body — buoyancy profile matched to ISO float fishing; the line body remains near the surface for float contact and wind resistance management while the tip section near the float sinks to avoid surface drag on the float drift
  • Neo Friction surface treatment — Tsuriken’s surface treatment for reduced friction through the rod guides during the cast; smooth surface for casting distance and reduced line wear at the guide contact points
  • Soft and highly resilient nylon — soft, supple construction for low rod-tip resistance during the drift and natural float presentation; high resilience (low memory) prevents the coil set that makes stiff lines hard to manage in cold conditions from rock platforms
  • Corrosion and UV resistant — surface treatment provides corrosion resistance against saltwater and UV degradation for extended durability in the harsh saltwater and sun exposure environment of rock fishing
  • 150m and 200m spool lengths — longer spool lengths than a standard leader pack for full main-line use on ISO and rock fishing outfits
  • Made in Japan — manufactured in Japan to Japanese ISO fishing line standards

Size Guide

  • #1.5 — light ISO for small species from sheltered rock platforms; bream and luderick on light tackle in calm to moderate conditions
  • #1.8 / #2 — standard ISO sizes for general rock platform fishing; bream, drummer and sweep in moderate conditions; the most commonly used ISO line sizes in Australian rock fishing
  • #2.5 — medium-heavy for exposed platforms and larger species; silver drummer and heavier bream in stronger current and swell
  • #5 — heavy ISO for exposed headlands, strong current and larger species; snapper and large drummer from high-energy platforms
