The SeaKnight ARCHER2 is a mid-range spinning reel built around a CNC-machined aluminium spool, graphite body frame, and an 8+1 ball bearing system. A built-in fish alarm (line-out clicker) activates when line is pulled off the spool under drag, making it well-suited to bait fishing, soaking rigs, or fishing with the rod in a holder. Five sizes from 2000 to 6000 cover light estuary and freshwater spinning through to heavier surf, rock, and offshore applications.

Construction — Component Breakdown

Confirmed from the exploded-parts diagram image:

  • Graphite body: lightweight composite frame; the original specifications list “plastic” material but the product’s own exploded diagram labels the body as graphite — a fibre-reinforced composite that is significantly stiffer and more corrosion-resistant than standard ABS plastic. Graphite bodies are the standard construction for reels in this price bracket and maintain alignment between the rotor shaft and body under load
  • CNC aluminium spool: machined from aluminium rather than cast or injection-moulded; CNC machining produces tighter dimensional tolerances, which means the spool lip is more uniform and the line rolls off more consistently on the cast
  • Aluminium handle with PVC knob: the handle arm is aluminium rather than graphite or plastic, adding rigidity under load; the PVC knob provides grip
  • Brass pinion gear: the pinion (the small gear that the handle drives) is brass, which resists wear better than zinc alloy alternatives at this price point
  • Stainless steel main shaft: corrosion-resistant and dimensionally stable; important for salt or brackish-water use
  • Open design balanced rotor: the cutaway rotor design reduces mass while keeping the rotor balanced; reduces the wobble and vibration that can occur with unbalanced rotors at higher retrieve speeds
  • One way clutch system: the anti-reverse mechanism that prevents the handle from spinning backward under fish pressure
  • Micro click drag setting: the front drag knob produces a click on each increment of adjustment, allowing repeatable drag settings and fine-tuning in the field
  • Line guide: the worm-drive or oscillating mechanism that lays line evenly across the spool on retrieve

Fish Alarm — Line-Out Clicker

The ARCHER2 includes a fish alarm system, confirmed in a dedicated product image showing the internal clicker mechanism. The caption reads: “sound is produced by the rotation of the parts that fit together.” The image shows a spring-loaded clicker that engages with the spool shaft mechanism when line is pulled off the spool against the drag. When a fish takes line, the clicker produces an audible ticking sound proportional to the rate at which line is leaving the spool — faster line loss = faster clicking.

This is particularly useful for bait fishing scenarios where the rod is left in a holder: beach fishing with baits soaking in the surf, estuary bream or flathead soaking a prawn or squid strip, or dam fishing for bass and perch with live bait. The angler can attend to other rods or prepare bait without needing to watch the rod tip, relying on the alarm to signal a run. The alarm does not lock the spool — it operates purely as an audible indicator while the drag system continues to function normally.

8+1 Ball Bearing System

The ARCHER2 uses 8 ball bearings plus 1 roller bearing (anti-reverse bearing) for a total of 9 bearing points. The 8 stainless steel ball bearings are distributed across the main shaft, handle, rotor, and line roller to smooth the retrieve at every point where rotating parts contact a fixed surface. The roller bearing in the anti-reverse mechanism eliminates handle back-play — the handle should feel solid and unidirectional with no rattle or give when pulled backward. More bearings in a reel does not automatically mean better quality, but 8+1BB at this price point represents a good bearing count relative to cost.

Full Specifications by Size

All data confirmed from the size chart image. Line capacity figures are in mm diameter / metres.

  • 2000 — 5.2:1 — 230g — Max drag 5.5kg — Line cap: 0.24mm/180m | 0.28mm/150m | 0.33mm/130m. Light spinning for bream, whiting, trout, estuary perch and bass on 4–8lb line. Pairs with 1–2m ultralight to light rods. Ideal for lure fishing in estuaries and freshwater
  • 3000 — 5.2:1 — 237g — Max drag 6.0kg — Line cap: 0.28mm/165m | 0.33mm/145m | 0.38mm/125m. Versatile mid-size for flathead, bream, snapper, bass and general estuary use on 6–10lb line. The most popular all-round spinning reel size for Australian estuary fishing
  • 4000 — 5.2:1 — 245g — Max drag 8.5kg — Line cap: 0.28mm/185m | 0.33mm/165m | 0.38mm/145m. Heavier estuary, inshore and light offshore use; suits snapper, trevally, kingfish and barramundi on 10–14lb line. Good braid capacity for deeper water work
  • 5000 — 4.9:1 — 327g — Max drag 9.0kg — Line cap: 0.35mm/230m | 0.40mm/195m | 0.45mm/145m. Surf, rock and heavier inshore fishing; suits larger snapper, mulloway, salmon and tailor from beach and rock platforms on 15–20lb line. Gear ratio drops to 4.9:1 for extra torque on bigger fish
  • 6000 — 4.9:1 — 335g — Max drag 13kg (28.6lb) — Line cap: 0.35mm/270m | 0.40mm/210m | 0.45mm/175m. Heavy surf, rock, pier and offshore jigging; suits large pelagics, mulloway, large snapper and GT; maximum drag across the range at 13kg. Generous line capacity for long surf casts and deep-water presentations
