The PURELURE ZANA is a BFS (Bait Finesse System) baitcasting reel with an adaptive magnetic brake system (SEBS), a one-piece cold-forged aluminium alloy frame at 139g, a 5.8g ultralight spool, 7.6:1 gear ratio, 4kg drag and 6+1 double-sealed waterproof bearings. Capable of casting lures as light as 3.5g (manufacturer recommended range 5–20g). Available in left-hand and right-hand retrieve. Designed to pair with BFS-rated spinning and casting rods for stream, impoundment and estuary finesse fishing.

SEBS — Self-Expanding Brake System (Adaptive Magnetic Brake)

The ZANA’s SEBS is the central engineering achievement of the reel and the mechanism that enables sub-5g casting on a baitcasting reel without backlash. It is not a fixed magnetic brake or a manually-adjusted centrifugal brake — it is a fully automatic adaptive system that changes braking force in real time during the cast based on the spool’s rotational speed.

The system has two moving components: the adaptive magnetic ring array (8 strong magnets arranged in a ring inside the reel body) and the spool induction rotor (a conductive component attached to the spool and mounted on a cam mechanism). The distance between these two components determines the braking force applied to the spool:

  • High RPM — cast launch phase: at the moment of release, the spool accelerates to maximum RPM; the cam mechanism responds to this high centrifugal force by allowing the spool induction rotor to rotate outward and move closer to the magnetic ring array; closer proximity = stronger magnetic field at the rotor = stronger Lorentz force acting on the rotor = stronger braking force applied to the spool; this is the moment when braking is most critical — the spool is spinning fastest relative to the lure’s forward speed, and without sufficient braking, the excess spool rotation produces backlash
  • Decreasing RPM — mid-cast phase: as the lure decelerates through air resistance and the spool’s speed begins to match the line’s forward speed, RPM drops; the cam mechanism allows the spool induction rotor to retract back away from the magnetic ring array; greater distance = weaker magnetic field at the rotor = weaker Lorentz force = less braking force; as braking is no longer needed to prevent backlash, the system removes it to preserve casting distance
  • Low RPM — end of cast: the rotor is at maximum distance from the magnets and minimum braking is applied; the spool is now decelerating naturally with the lure as it approaches the target; the automatic brake reduction at this phase prevents the braking system from cutting casting distance short

The practical consequence of this adaptive behaviour: the SEBS applies maximum braking exactly when the spool needs it (the launch phase when backlash risk is highest) and minimum braking when the lure is in flight and the spool is already matched to the line’s speed. This is the engineering mechanism that allows the ZANA to cast a 3.5g lure on a baitcasting reel without backlash — a fixed brake setting that prevents backlash at launch would over-brake during the cast and reduce distance; a setting optimised for distance would under-brake at launch and produce backlash; the adaptive system removes this trade-off by adjusting continuously through the cast.

5.8g Spool — The Foundation of BFS Performance

The ZANA’s spool weighs 5.8g. This is the single most important specification on a BFS baitcasting reel. To understand why, consider what happens during a baitcasting cast:

  • The lure is released and its forward momentum pulls line from the spool
  • The spool must decelerate from peak RPM at the cast’s end as the lure slows; if the spool decelerates slower than the line, it overruns and produces a backlash
  • The force available to decelerate the spool is the tension in the line — which is determined by the lure’s weight and air resistance pulling back on the line
  • A heavy spool (20–30g on a standard baitcasting reel) has high rotational inertia; a 3.5g lure does not produce enough line tension to decelerate a heavy spool quickly enough at the end of the cast, producing a backlash regardless of brake setting
  • At 5.8g, the ZANA’s spool has rotational inertia low enough that a 3.5g lure’s line tension can decelerate the spool adequately; the SEBS brake provides the additional deceleration force at launch when line tension alone is insufficient

The 5.8g spool combined with the SEBS adaptive brake is what makes casting 3.5–5g lures on a baitcasting reel viable. Either component alone would not achieve this — a light spool without adaptive braking would still backlash at launch; a good adaptive brake on a heavy spool still cannot overcome high rotational inertia at the end of the cast.

One-Piece Cold-Forged Aluminium Alloy Frame

The ZANA’s main frame is cast and cold-forged as a single piece. Cold forging compresses the aluminium alloy under high pressure after casting, aligning the grain structure of the metal and eliminating the voids and inconsistencies that exist in a simple casting. The result is a frame with higher tensile strength and greater dimensional consistency than a cast-only aluminium frame of the same weight. The one-piece construction eliminates assembly joints between frame sections, maintaining the precise dimensional tolerances needed for the gear mesh and bearing seat alignment in a compact reel — at 139g and 22cm circumference, the ZANA has no dimensional margin for tolerance stack-up between assembled frame components.

Photolithography Laser-Engraved Gears

The ZANA’s drive gear is produced using a photolithography process to define the gear tooth profile before laser engraving. Photolithography (the same process used in semiconductor manufacturing) exposes a precise pattern at a resolution far exceeding mechanical cutting; the laser-engraved teeth conform to this pattern, producing gear tooth profiles with tighter dimensional tolerances and lower surface roughness than mechanically cut or hobbed gear teeth. The consequence for the retrieve: tighter tooth profiles mean less backlash (clearance) between mating gear teeth in the gear mesh; less backlash = less of the handle rotation converted to play before the gear engages; the retrieve feels direct and connected with no perceptible slack. The double-axis bearing pinion support system supports the pinion gear from both ends of its axis rather than one, preventing the pinion from deflecting under the radial load of the retrieve and maintaining consistent gear mesh alignment throughout the fight and retrieve.

Tapered Line Guide

The ZANA uses a tapered (larger aperture) line guide rather than a standard small-aperture line guide. As line leaves the spool and passes through the line guide on the cast, the angle between the line’s path off the spool lip and its path through the guide ring creates friction; a smaller aperture forces the line to bend at a sharper angle through the guide, increasing this friction. The ZANA’s tapered guide has a larger aperture that reduces the angle of pitch, reducing the friction the line experiences at this point and improving casting distance. The guide also uses a disengaging design that moves out of the line path during the cast, further reducing interference with line flow at the moment of maximum cast speed.

6+1 Double-Sealed Waterproof Bearings

Six ball bearings and one roller bearing, all double-sealed for waterproofing. At a total reel weight of 139g, bearing smoothness is a proportionally larger factor in perceived retrieve quality than in heavier reels — there is less reel mass to dampen micro-vibrations from bearing roughness; the double-sealed waterproof specification ensures the bearing surfaces remain smooth and protected across use in stream, estuary and saltwater environments.

Compact Frame — One-Hand Operation

The ZANA’s grip circumference is 13cm, which is significantly smaller than a standard baitcasting reel. The compact frame is designed for one-handed operation — the angler can grip the reel and rod handle in one hand and work the rod tip with wrist movements without repositioning the grip between each cast and retrieve, which is the practical requirement for efficient stream BFS fishing where the rod tip action is the primary lure driver.
