Why 5.2:1 for Slow Pitch Jigging

Slow pitch jigging uses a lower gear ratio than standard lure fishing deliberately. The technique involves lifting the rod to pitch the jig upward and then allowing the reel to recover line as the rod drops and the jig flutters back down on a semi-slack line. The flutter on the drop is where most slow pitch strikes occur. A lower gear ratio (5.2:1 vs a standard 6.0–6.4:1) provides more cranking torque per handle turn, which is critical when retrieving heavy jigs (80–200g range) from depth in current — the extra mechanical advantage reduces arm fatigue and maintains consistent jig action through the retrieve on long drops to 50–100m depths. A high-speed reel (6.0:1+) in the same situation provides less torque per turn and requires more physical effort to maintain the same retrieve speed against the water resistance of a heavy jig at depth.
