The Piscifun Carbon X is a full monocoque carbon fibre spinning reel across 500 to 4000 series, with the frame, rotor and side plate all constructed from carbon fibre composite. Weights from 145g (500) to 272g (4000). Features 10+1 shielded stainless bearings, a zinc-alloy helical drive gear, a stainless steel main shaft, 3-disk oversized carbon drag washers rated to 15kg, a hollow-core spool, micro-click drag adjustment and a threaded aluminium handle. Full Monocoque Carbon Fibre Construction

The Carbon X uses a full monocoque construction — the frame, rotor and side plate are all carbon fibre composite without a separate internal aluminium or graphite subframe. In monocoque engineering, the outer shell IS the structural element; the carbon fibre composite’s properties (high tensile and compressive strength relative to weight) are distributed through the shell geometry itself rather than through a discrete internal frame that the outer covers enclose. The consequence for reel design:

• Weight reduction: the monocoque approach eliminates the mass of a separate internal frame; the Carbon X 500 is 145g and the 1000 is 162g — compared to 220g for the graphite-body Piscifun Viper X in the same 1000 series; the 58g difference across equivalent sizes is the direct result of replacing a graphite-over-frame construction with a full monocoque carbon shell
• Maintained rigidity: carbon fibre composite has a higher stiffness-to-weight ratio than both graphite-reinforced polymer and aluminium alloy; the monocoque shell distributes structural load through the carbon fibre layup rather than concentrating it at a frame; under the torsional and radial loads of fighting a fish on drag, a carbon monocoque body resists the flex that causes bearing misalignment and gear mesh roughness as effectively as a heavier aluminium construction
• Rotor and side plate consistency: both the rotor and side plate are carbon fibre in the same monocoque system, not polymer-moulded components on a carbon frame; the material consistency across body, rotor and side plate means the thermal expansion coefficients are matched, so differential expansion between the body and its components under temperature change does not cause dimensional changes at the bearing seats or gear mesh clearances

Helical Drive Gear — Zinc Alloy

The Carbon X drive gear is zinc alloy with a helical tooth profile — the gear teeth are cut at an angle to the rotation axis rather than parallel to it. The difference from straight-cut gears:

• Multiple tooth contact: straight-cut gears make contact across one tooth at a time as the gears rotate; helical gears have multiple teeth in simultaneous contact because the angled cut means one tooth engages before the previous one fully disengages; multiple simultaneous contact points distribute the load across a larger total contact area at every instant of mesh, reducing the peak stress on each individual tooth
• Smoother retrieve: the gradual engagement and disengagement of helical teeth produces a more gradual transfer of load through the mesh than the abrupt engagement of straight-cut teeth; the retrieve feels smoother because the load transfer is continuous rather than pulsed at each tooth engagement; this is the same engineering principle used in automotive transmissions where helical gears are standard for noise and smoothness reasons
• Lower noise: the gradual tooth contact of helical gears produces less impact noise at the mesh than straight-cut gears; the audible difference is a quieter retrieve, which matters in shallow-water finesse fishing where reel noise can alert fish near the surface

10+1 Shielded Stainless Bearings

The Carbon X has 10 ball bearings and 1 roller bearing, all shielded stainless steel. At 145–162g for the 500 and 1000 series, the bearing system is responsible for a significant portion of the retrieve smoothness at weights where every component is minimised; 10 bearings distributed across the reel’s rotation points ensure that the ultra-light carbon body’s rigidity advantage is not lost to rough or irregular rotation at the bearing surfaces.

3-Disk Oversized Carbon Drag Washers — Dual Seal

The Carbon X uses three oversized carbon fibre drag washers with a dual-sealed rubber ring system surrounding the drag stack. The oversized washer format increases the contact surface area of each washer beyond a standard-size washer at the same diameter, providing more total drag surface at lower clamping pressure per unit area. Lower clamping pressure per unit area produces a smoother initial drag engagement and less heat concentration per washer surface on sustained fish runs. The dual-sealed rubber ring prevents water and dust from entering the drag stack from outside the spool body — contamination of drag washers with water or particles is the primary cause of drag inconsistency in spinning reels used in field conditions.

Hollow-Core Spool

The Carbon X spool uses a hollow-core architecture — the spool body has material removed from the interior where it contributes to spool mass but not to spool structural strength. The practical effect: a lighter spool with less rotational inertia than a solid equivalent. Lower spool inertia means the spool responds more quickly to changes in line tension during the cast and retrieve; in ultralight applications where the line classes and lure weights are minimal, the spool’s rotational mass is a proportionally larger component of the system’s resistance to accurate control, and reducing it improves feel and response.

Gear Ratio and Anti-Reverse Notes

The Carbon X uses 5.2:1 on the 500 and 1000 series and 6.2:1 on the 2000, 3000 and 4000 series. The 5.2:1 ratio on the lighter finesse sizes provides more retrieve torque per handle turn than the 6.2:1, which is suited to the lighter drag loads and slower retrieve presentations of ultralight lure fishing with 1–4lb line and sub-5g lures.

Important: the 500 and 1000 series do not include an anti-reverse switch. The anti-reverse is fixed in the engaged position on these two sizes. Anglers who prefer to use back-winding (releasing drag by winding backward against the anti-reverse) should select the 2000 series or larger, where the anti-reverse switch is present and the feature is available.
