Wide Gap EWG — Why Hook Gap Matters for Soft Plastics

A standard hook profile has a relatively narrow gap between the hook point and the shank. When a soft plastic is rigged on a narrow-gap hook, the body of the plastic occupies the gap and the hook point sits close to or against the plastic body — on the strike, the hook must travel through the plastic body before it can penetrate the fish’s jaw, which reduces hookup rates particularly on fish that spit the lure quickly. An EWG (Extra Wide Gap) hook has a significantly wider clearance between the hook point and the shank. When the plastic is rigged on an EWG hook with the point buried lightly in the back of the plastic for a weedless presentation, the gap gives the hook point room to swing clear of the plastic body and penetrate the jaw cleanly on the strike. The result is faster, more reliable hook penetration on the same strike force — critical for light-biting species like bream and estuary perch that don’t generate the aggressive strike force of bass or flathead.

Super Lock Keeper

The super lock keeper is a barbed wire coil or barb mounted on the shank near the hook eye. The head of the soft plastic is pressed onto the keeper, which grips the plastic and holds it in the correct position on the hook without glue. Without a keeper, soft plastics slide down the shank during casting and retrieves, bunching at the hook bend and ruining the action and the weedless presentation. The super lock keeper maintains the plastic in the correct nose-up position on the shank throughout the session, including after multiple fish or repeated casts.

• Texas rig — thread the head of the soft plastic on the keeper, then bury the hook point back into the body of the plastic for a fully weedless presentation; the most common application for EWG hooks in structure fishing
• Direct / exposed hook — rig the plastic with the hook point exposed for open-water presentations where snags are not a concern; the wide gap maximises hookup rate on the exposed point
