How a Circle Hook Works — Self-Setting Corner Hookset

A circle hook has a fundamentally different geometry to a J-hook. The point of a circle hook curves back toward the shank in a circular arc, so that the point is angled inward rather than projecting away from the shank. When a fish takes the bait and moves away, the circular geometry causes the hook to rotate as tension is applied:

• The rotation mechanism: as the line tightens, the circular hook body rotates within the fish’s mouth; the inward-curving point sweeps across soft tissue without penetrating until it reaches the corner of the mouth, where the angle of the jaw creates a contact point that stops the rotation and drives the point in; the hook self-sets at the corner of the mouth without requiring a sharp strike from the angler
• Corner of mouth hookset: the corner of the mouth is the strongest hookhold position — the jaw tissue is thickest and toughest there compared to the soft palate or throat; a corner hookset is also the easiest to remove cleanly for catch-and-release, as the hook can be backed out the same way it went in without requiring the barb to tear through additional tissue
• Reduced deep hooking: because the point only penetrates when it reaches the corner geometry, the hook does not penetrate in the throat, gut or gill area during the rotation; this is the primary mechanism by which circle hooks reduce deep hooking compared to J-hooks, which penetrate immediately on any contact between the point and soft tissue

Offset Circle Design

This hook is an offset circle hook — the point is angled slightly to the side of the hook’s plane rather than being perfectly in-line with the shank. A straight (non-offset) circle hook is the purest self-setting design but can have lower hook-up ratios on species that mouth baits tentatively before committing. The offset increases hook-up ratios by initiating penetration slightly earlier in the rotation cycle, at the cost of a marginally increased deep-hooking risk compared to an in-line circle. For bait fishing for tuna, kingfish and snapper where the fish strike decisively and at speed, the offset circle is the preferred configuration.

Pre-Attached Copper Barrel Swivel

Each hook comes with a copper barrel swivel attached between the hook eye and the leader connection point. The swivel serves two functions:

• Bait rotation: live and dead bait fish (yakkas, slimy mackerel, pilchards, strips) rotate as they move through the water; without a swivel, each rotation of the bait transfers torque directly to the leader, accumulating twist that weakens the leader and causes it to kink and tangle around the hook; the barrel swivel absorbs each rotation of the bait independently, preventing twist transfer to the leader
• Tangle reduction: when a bait on a long trace is cast and retrieved or trolled, the trace can wrap around the leader on the swing; the swivel at the hook end creates a pivot point that reduces the wrap frequency and allows any wraps to unwind rather than tighten

The swivel is copper rather than stainless — copper barrel swivels have a smooth internal bearing surface that rotates freely under low torque loads, which is important for detecting the gentle rotation of a live bait rather than only spinning when torque load reaches the swivel’s threshold.

High-Carbon Steel Construction

The hook wire is high-carbon steel. For large pelagic species — tuna, kingfish, large snapper — the initial run after the hookset generates significant load on the hook wire, the bend and the point. High-carbon steel provides higher tensile strength per unit of wire diameter than standard carbon steel, allowing the hook to maintain its shape and point position under the load of a fish running at speed without the bend opening or the point deforming. The hooks are corrosion-treated for use in both freshwater and saltwater.
