The 9KM DWLIFE Offset Circle Hook Kit is a high carbon steel mixed-size hook pack suited to bottom fishing, bait fishing and paternoster rig setups for bream, snapper, whiting, flathead and a wide range of estuary and reef species. Available in 100, 120, 210 and 250 piece packs with a mixed selection of hook sizes in each pack. Barbed offset circle hooks throughout.

Offset Circle Hooks — What They Are and Why They Matter

A circle hook has a distinctive inward-turned hook point — the point curves back toward the hook shank rather than pointing straight up or slightly offset as on a J-hook. When a fish takes the bait and moves away, the circle hook’s geometry causes the hook to slide out of the fish’s throat and find purchase at the corner of the jaw rather than deep in the gut. This self-setting jaw-hook characteristic produces two significant advantages over J-hooks for bait fishing:

  • Jaw hook rather than gut hook — circle hooks almost always hook fish in the jaw or corner of the mouth, even when the angler does not strike; gut-hooking (deep hooking into the throat or stomach) is rare; critical for catch-and-release fishing where gut-hooked fish have significantly lower survival rates than jaw-hooked fish
  • No strike required — circle hooks are designed to be fished on a tight line without striking; as the fish moves away with the bait, the hook rolls out of the bait and catches the jaw corner; striking with a circle hook (as with a J-hook) often pulls the hook out of the fish’s mouth before it can set; allow the fish to take the bait and move away, then apply steady pressure rather than striking

The offset variant (hook point slightly angled away from the hook plane) makes the hook slightly easier to bait and can improve hookup rates on some species compared to a true in-line circle hook, at a small cost to gut-hooking performance. Most hooks sold as “circle hooks” in the budget-to-mid market are offset circle hooks.

Applications

  • Bream — smaller sizes (#8–#2) on paternoster rigs and running sinker rigs with prawns, worms and bread for bream in estuaries, harbours and rivers
  • Snapper — medium sizes (#1–3/0) on whole pilchard, squid strip and cut bait on paternoster and running sinker rigs from boats and rock platforms
  • Whiting — small sizes (#6–#2) on beach and estuary whiting rigs with worm and prawn bait
  • Flathead — medium sizes (#1–1/0) on whole or half pilchard and fresh cut bait from estuary and beach bottom rigs
  • Freshwater catfish (Tandanus) — medium to larger sizes (#1–2/0) on worm and yabby bait in freshwater rivers and impoundments
  • General bait fishing — the mixed-size pack suits anglers who fish across multiple species and need a range of hook sizes without purchasing individual size packets

High Carbon Steel

High carbon steel hooks have a higher carbon content than standard mild steel hooks, which produces a harder, stronger wire that holds a sharp point longer under repeated use and can be made to finer diameters at equivalent strength. The finer wire diameter reduces bait damage — particularly with soft baits like live prawns and worms — compared to thicker mild steel hooks of the same hook gap.

Pack Options

  • 100 piece mixed size — smaller pack for targeted fishing with a specific size range; suits anglers who primarily target one or two species
  • 120 piece mixed size — slightly larger mixed-size selection
  • 210 piece mixed size — larger bulk pack with broader size range; suits anglers who fish across multiple species and conditions and want a single pack to cover the full range
  • 250 piece mixed size — largest pack; maximum variety of hook sizes; suited to guides, charter operators and anglers who fish frequently across multiple locations and target species
