The SeaKnight X9 is a 9-strand braided PE fishing line with wide angle braiding technology, a smooth anti-friction coating and UV-proof and seawater-proof treatments. Available in three spool lengths — 150m, 300m and 500m — across eight line classes from 17lb (0.14mm) to 80lb (0.40mm), in Low-Vis Green and Low-Vis Gray. 9-Strand Construction — Why 9?

The X9 uses 9 fibre carrier bundles in the braid, which is an unusual carrier count in a market dominated by 4-strand and 8-strand braids. The choice of 9 has two specific engineering consequences:

• Non-repeating braid pattern: 8-strand braid has a symmetrical repeating pattern — 8 carriers mean there are 4 pairs of carriers at opposite angular positions around the braid centre; this symmetry causes the braid’s contact pattern to repeat at consistent intervals, which can produce subtle flat spots at consistent positions around the circumference of the finished braid; 9 is a prime number, so the braid pattern cannot close into a symmetric repeating cycle the same way — the contact between carrier bundles is more uniformly distributed around the circumference, producing a rounder cross-section with fewer consistent flat spots
• Exceptional knot strength: knot strength is determined by how the braid behaves at the knot constriction point; at a knot, the braid’s individual carrier bundles each carry a portion of the total load through the constriction; more independent carrier bundles distributes the load across more fibre paths through the knot, reducing the peak stress concentration on any individual bundle at the most vulnerable point in the braid’s structure; 9 carrier bundles through a knot constriction distributes load more finely than 8, which distributes it more finely than 4; the X9’s “great knot strength” claim is a direct consequence of the carrier count, not a surface treatment or separate process

Wide Angle Braiding Technology

The X9 uses a wide angle braid construction — the helix angle at which the 9 carrier bundles are wound around each other during braiding is larger than in a standard braid. The helix angle determines how steeply the bundles cross each other at each interlocking point:

Smooth Coating Layer

The X9 carries a smooth outer coating layer that fills the remaining surface micro-gaps in the 9-strand braid. Combined with the 9-strand’s already-reduced surface gap size and the wide angle construction’s tighter bundle interlocking, the coating layer produces a surface finish that is smoother than a coated 8-strand braid at equivalent diameter. The coating also provides the seawater-proof anti-corrosion barrier that protects the UHMWPE fibre bundles from salt crystal deposition between bundles, which acts as an internal abrasive and progressively weakens the braid from the inside if saltwater penetrates the braid surface.

UV-Proof Treatment

The X9’s UV-proof outer coating blocks ultraviolet radiation from reaching the UHMWPE fibre below. UV exposure degrades UHMWPE at the molecular level — breaking polymer chain bonds and reducing tensile strength progressively over a season of outdoor use; a UV-proof coat preserves the fibre’s rated breaking strength across the season and maintains colour integrity in the water-based dye. Low-Vis Green vs Low-Vis Gray

• 150m: top-shot application over backing on spinning reels or overhead reels where 100–150m is the working section; also direct fill for small spinning reels in the 1000–2000 class at the lighter line classes (17–22lb); suited to the Low-Vis Gray range where short lengths are adequate
• 300m: direct fill for 3000–5000 class spinning reels at the full line capacity; the most common spool length for general estuary and coastal lure fishing; allows the full reel to be filled with X9 without backing on most mid-range spinning reels in the 3000–4000 class
• 500m: direct fill for large game overhead reels and heavy spinning reels in the 6000–10000 class; or purchase one 500m spool and cut it to fill two smaller reels; suited to the heavier line classes (50–80lb) where overhead game reels and heavy jigging reels require full spool capacity in the working range
