Spectra UHMWPE Fibre

The M8 is built on Spectra fibre — Honeywell’s trademarked ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). Spectra is not a generic description of UHMWPE; it is a specific fibre brand produced by Honeywell to defined molecular weight and fibre consistency standards. Spectra is used in industrial applications including body armour, cut-resistant protective equipment and high-strength marine ropes where consistent tensile strength and abrasion resistance across the full length of a fibre lot is critical. In fishing line, Spectra fibre designation indicates:

• Consistent breaking strength: Spectra fibre is produced to tighter molecular consistency standards than commodity UHMWPE; a 300m spool of Spectra-based braid has less breaking strength variation along its length than a commodity UHMWPE equivalent; at 80–100lb breaking strength, this consistency matters — an unexpected weak point at 60lb in a nominally 80lb braid is a terminal-tackle event
• Abrasion resistance: Spectra’s high molecular density makes it more resistant to surface abrasion from reef contact, guide friction and sinker chafe than standard UHMWPE; at heavy line classes used near structure (rock fishing, reef jigging), abrasion resistance determines how many casts a section of braid survives before developing surface damage that reduces its rated strength

• Rounder cross-section: 8 fibre bundles fill the circular cross-section of the braid more completely than 4; a 4-strand braid at the same diameter has more visible gaps between the four bundles and a squarer cross-section profile; 8-strand approaches a true cylinder; a rounder braid makes consistent, low-friction contact with guide rings rather than the irregular contact of a non-circular profile, reducing friction on the cast and improving casting distance with heavy lures
• Smoother surface: fewer and smaller gaps between fibre bundles means a smoother outer surface; the F+ coating can fill the remaining micro-gaps more completely on an 8-strand braid than on a 4-strand, producing a consistent, smooth surface across the full braid length
• Quieter through the guides: 4-strand braid produces a distinctive “zip” sound as the irregular surface contacts the guide rings on the cast; 8-strand braid is significantly quieter due to the smoother, more uniform outer surface; in heavy jigging and boat fishing where repetitive casting is continuous, this is a minor quality-of-use improvement
• Improved line lay on the spool: a rounder braid stacks more uniformly on the spool than a non-circular braid; uniform stacking prevents the pressure points that cause coils to embed into lower layers under drag load, which produces drag spikes when the embedded coils release

F+ Seawater-Proof Coating

The M8 uses SeaKnight’s F+ coating — an upgraded formulation above the standard coating used on the 4-strand TP Series. The F+ designation indicates a coating with specific seawater corrosion resistance properties:

• Seawater ingress prevention: the F+ coating fills the inter-fibre gaps at the braid surface, preventing saltwater from penetrating into the braid body where salt crystal deposition between fibres would act as an internal abrasive; at heavy line classes where the individual fibre bundles are thicker, this is less critical than in ultralight braid, but at 150m spool lengths used as top-shot on game reels, coating longevity matters across a full season of saltwater use
• Surface smoothness: F+ produces a smoother surface than standard coating; combined with the 8-strand’s already-rounder cross-section, the M8’s surface is significantly smoother than a standard 4-strand coated line of equivalent diameter

UV-Proof and Water-Based Dyeing

The M8 carries the same UV-proof outer coating and patented water-based dyeing technology found across SeaKnight’s premium braid range. The UV coating blocks UV radiation before it reaches the Spectra fibre, preserving tensile strength across the season. 150m Spool — Top-Shot and Heavy Reel Fill

The M8 is supplied in 150m spools. At 22–100lb breaking strength, 150m is the correct quantity for heavy saltwater applications:

• Top-shot: large game overhead reels and heavy boat overhead reels hold 400–800m of line capacity; the working section — the line that actually reaches the fish zone during a fight or a lure presentation — is typically 100–200m; the remaining capacity is filled with backing (cheaper heavy monofilament or lower-grade braid); top-shotting 150m of M8 over backing provides Spectra performance in the working section at a fraction of the cost of filling the entire reel with premium braid
• Full fill for medium overhead and spinning reels: spinning reels and overhead reels in the 5000–8000 class used for heavy boat and jigging applications hold 150–300m of heavy braid; 150m fills a 5000–6000 class spinning reel with heavy braid to within 2–3mm of the spool lip without backing

Low-Vis Green

The M8 is available only in Low-Vis Green — a low-visibility colour for saltwater fishing applications where line visibility reduces fish confidence.
