The SeaKnight 4-Strand PE Braid is a multifilament braided fishing line made from Japan-sourced UHMWPE (ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene) fibre with a smooth surface coating. Available in 12 line classes from 0.4# (8lb) to 8.0# (80lb) across three spool lengths (300m, 500m, 1000m) in up to 8 colours. Suited to freshwater and saltwater spinning and overhead reel applications.

Japan-Sourced UHMWPE Fibre

The braid is made from Japan-sourced UHMWPE (ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene) fibre — the same base material used in all premium braided fishing lines. UHMWPE is one of the strongest synthetic fibres by weight, with a tensile strength-to-weight ratio that allows braided fishing line to achieve high breaking strengths at very fine diameters compared to nylon monofilament of equivalent breaking strength. At 0.4# (8lb), the SeaKnight braid has a nominal diameter of 0.10mm — for comparison, a nylon monofilament rated 8lb typically runs at 0.23–0.25mm diameter. This diameter difference is the fundamental reason anglers use braided line over mono: for the same breaking strength, braid takes up significantly less spool space and passes through the water with less resistance.

Japan-sourced UHMWPE fibre is produced to tighter fibre consistency standards than standard-grade UHMWPE, which translates to more consistent breaking strength along the length of the spool and less diameter variation between production batches.

4-Strand Construction

The SeaKnight braid is a 4-strand (4-carrier) construction — four bundles of UHMWPE fibre are braided together in a round pattern. Compared to early twisted or flat braids, a 4-strand round braid casts more smoothly off a spinning reel because the rounded cross-section peels off the spool without catching on the guide frames. Compared to 8-strand constructions, 4-strand braid has a slightly more textured surface feel and a marginally less circular cross-section, but it achieves these casting and line-feel characteristics at a significantly lower cost per metre — making it the appropriate construction for high-volume applications such as filling large overhead reels, using as backing, and for anglers who change braid frequently.

Surface Coating

The braid has a special surface coating applied after braiding. The coating serves two functions: it fills the small gaps between the fibre bundles at the surface of the braid, producing a smoother outer texture that reduces friction through the guides on the cast; and it reduces water absorption into the braid body, which prevents the line from becoming waterlogged and heavy during the session. Uncoated braids absorb water into the fibre gaps and become progressively heavier and less responsive as the session progresses — the coating slows this process. The coating also contributes to colour retention by binding the dye to the fibre surface rather than allowing it to wash out.

PE Braid Properties vs Nylon Monofilament and Fluorocarbon

• Near-zero stretch: braided PE has approximately 2–3% elongation before breaking, compared to nylon mono’s 25–30% and fluorocarbon’s 20–25%; near-zero stretch transmits every movement of the lure and every tap of the sinker on the bottom directly to the angler’s hand, making braid significantly more sensitive than mono or fluorocarbon for detecting light bites and soft bottom contact
• Very low memory: braid does not retain the coil shape of the spool the way nylon does; when cast, braid leaves the spool in a straight line without the initial coiling loops that cause tangles with new nylon; on a cold morning with fresh mono, coil memory is immediately noticeable; with braid it is absent regardless of temperature
• Floating: PE fibre is less dense than water and the braid floats on the surface; for surface lure presentations and shallow lure fishing this is an advantage; for deep jigging or bottom fishing where a sinking mainline is preferable, a fluorocarbon leader of adequate length compensates for the floating mainline and the angled line between surface and depth
• Thin diameter: finer diameter for equivalent breaking strength means more line on the spool, less water resistance on the retrieve, and a faster sink rate for jigs and sinkers; a 1000m spool of 1.0# braid (20lb) fits on a reel that would only hold 200–300m of nylon mono at equivalent breaking strength
• Visible underwater: braided PE is more visible underwater than fluorocarbon; the standard practice is to use a fluorocarbon leader of 1–2m between the braid mainline and the lure or hook; the leader provides the near-invisible connection to the terminal end while the braid provides the sensitivity and spool capacity

Spool Length Selection

• 300m — suits spinning reels in the 2500–4000 class for most applications; a full fill of most spinning reels in this range with line to spare for cutting back after abrasion; the most economical entry point for each line class
• 500m — suits larger spinning reels and small overhead reels; enough to fill one large reel or two standard spinning reels from a single spool; useful for anglers running multiple outfits at the same line class
• 1000m — suits large overhead reels for boat, surf and game fishing that require high line capacity; or use as a bulk spool to fill 3–5 spinning reels of the same line class at the lowest cost per metre; recommended for heavier line classes (3.0# and above) where 300m may not adequately fill larger reel spools
