Toray 30T+40T Dual-Modulus Carbon Cloth

The TORRENT blank is constructed from two grades of Toray carbon fibre — 30T in the butt and mid-section and 40T in the upper and tip section. Toray is the world’s leading carbon fibre manufacturer (Japan), supplying the carbon fibre used in Shimano, Daiwa and most major premium rod blanks. The “T” designation in Toray’s carbon range refers to tensile modulus:

• 30T (standard modulus): approximately 30 ton/mm² tensile modulus; high tensile strength and impact resistance; used in the butt and power section of the blank where the highest bending stress concentrates during the fight and the cast; 30T carbon is less brittle than higher-modulus grades and absorbs the shock loads of hook-setting and sudden directional changes from a fish without the fracture risk of a full high-modulus construction
• 40T (intermediate modulus): approximately 40 ton/mm² tensile modulus; stiffer and lighter than 30T at the same wall thickness; used in the upper and tip section where stiffness contributes to blank sensitivity — the stiffer the tip section, the more efficiently vibration from lure-bottom contact, lure wobble and tentative bite detection is transmitted along the blank to the angler’s hand; at 1.3mm top diameter and extra-fast action, the 40T tip is optimised for vibration transmission rather than load-bearing

The practical consequence of the 30T+40T combination is a blank that is sensitive and responsive in the tip (where the angler needs feedback) while being structurally durable in the butt (where the blank is under the highest stress during the fight). A full 40T construction would be stiffer and more sensitive throughout but more prone to butt-section fracture under sharp loading; a full 30T construction would be stronger but less sensitive in the tip. The dual construction captures the advantage of each grade at the section of the blank where it matters.

Fuji Guide Rings

Extra-Fast Action Taper

The TORRENT is rated extra-fast (FF) action — the blank’s primary flex point is in the top quarter of the blank, within approximately 40–50cm of the tip. The rest of the blank — from the flex point to the butt — remains essentially straight under load. Extra-fast action is the most responsive blank profile for lure fishing and specifically suits the following techniques:

• Hard body diving lures: lure action is driven by the rod tip; extra-fast action maximises the efficiency of tip movements (twitches, jerks, pauses) into lure movements; the stiff lower blank does not absorb these inputs but transmits them directly to the lure via the line
• Surface lures (topwater): walking-the-dog surface lures require a rhythmic side-to-side rod tip movement; extra-fast action concentrates this movement at the tip and keeps it sharp and consistent without the tip-bend dampening that a moderate action blank would introduce
• Soft plastics: hop, twitch and shake presentations require rod tip movements that translate directly into lure animation; the stiff lower blank keeps the rod stable during the drop phase while the angler reads tension in the line without inadvertently moving the lure through accidental lower-blank flex
• Sensitivity: with the flex point concentrated near the tip, the lower portion of the blank is rigid enough to transmit vibration from the lure to the grip with minimal signal loss; on a moderate or slow action blank, the broader flex zone absorbs and dampens some of the vibration before it reaches the hand
