How to Fish the Daio 190F — Diving Stickbait Technique

The most important thing to know about the Daio 190F: fish it as a diving stickbait, not as a conventional popper. Despite the popper-style cup, the Daio’s design and high buoyancy are optimised for a diving stickbait retrieve — long or short sweeps with slack line on the pause — rather than the continuous cupped-face popping action of a traditional popper. Anglers who approach this lure with a standard popper retrieve will underfish it.

Two primary retrieves:

• Traditional long sweeps — the foundation retrieve for the Daio 190F; sweep the rod in a long, smooth arc, then drop the rod tip and allow the line to go slack before the next sweep; on the sweep, the lure dives just below the surface and produces a natural wobble with body roll and tail kick, pulling a bubble trail behind it; on the pause with slack line, the lure rises back to the surface and suspends flat; this is the same cadence used with a conventional stickbait but the Daio’s small cup adds bubble trail on each dive that a plain pencil stickbait does not produce; the combination of diving, bubble trail and body roll at high speed triggers aggressive surface strikes from kingfish and GT in clear blue water
