What Is a Paternoster Rig

A paternoster rig (also called a ledger rig or dropper rig) suspends multiple baited hooks above the sinker on short dropper loops or dropper leaders tied to the main leader. The sinker sits on the bottom and the hooks hang at fixed intervals above it, keeping baited hooks at different heights in the water column simultaneously. This allows multiple species feeding at different depths to be targeted in a single cast — a bottom-feeding species like flathead or whiting takes the lowest hook, while a mid-water species like bream or small snapper takes a higher dropper.
