The 9KM DWLIFE Baitholder Hook is a long-shank, high-carbon steel hook with two shank bait-holding barbs, a beak point and an offset hook point. Available in 8 sizes from Size 10 (5mm gap) to Size 6/0 (18.5mm gap) in 50-piece and 100-piece packs. Suited to natural bait fishing with prawns, nippers, whitebait, bloodworms and strip baits for bream, whiting, flathead, snapper, mulloway and kingfish.
The distinguishing feature of a baitholder hook is one or two small barbs cut or pressed into the back of the shank — pointing toward the bend rather than toward the eye. When a soft bait (prawn, nipper, worm, whitebait) is threaded onto the hook shank, the barbs grip the bait material and prevent it sliding down the shank toward the bend and off the hook during the cast, on the retrieve or in current. Without shank barbs, soft natural baits need to be threaded very precisely and still tend to slide under casting load and water pressure. The 9KM baitholder has two barbs rather than one, providing grip at two points along the shank length for bulkier baits that require more support.
The hook point has a beak geometry — the tip curves inward slightly toward the shank rather than projecting straight from the bend. The beak curve concentrates the point at the tip into a smaller contact area, which increases the pressure per unit area on the fish’s jaw tissue on the hookset and drives the point through harder tissue (bone, cartilage at the corner of the mouth) more easily than a round or straight point of equivalent wire gauge. The beak curve also acts as a retention feature once the hook is set — the inward-curving tip makes it harder for the fish to back the hook out by opening its mouth and shaking, because the curve catches against the jaw tissue rather than pulling back through the entry point cleanly.
The point is angled slightly to one side of the shank’s plane — rather than the point being directly in line with the shank when viewed from the side, it is displaced to the left or right by a few degrees. When a fish takes a bait presented on an offset hook and mouths it, the offset geometry causes the hook to roll slightly as tension is applied, driving the point into the jaw rather than pulling straight back through the bait without penetrating. This rotation-to-penetration effect is particularly important for timid biters — species like bream and whiting that mouth the bait and move slowly rather than striking aggressively; an in-line (non-offset) hook often pulls back through the bait on these light takes without the point contacting the jaw.
The shank is longer than a standard baitholder of equivalent hook size. The extra shank length provides additional surface for bait threading — a prawn or nipper can be threaded further up the shank with the tail section locked by the barbs, leaving the head and legs hanging naturally at the bend; a whitebait or small pilchard can be threaded through the body with more hook length passing through the bait for a more secure presentation. The long shank also makes hook removal from the fish’s mouth easier — more shank to grip with forceps or fingers when the hook is swallowed or set deep.
The hook wire is high-carbon steel for higher tensile strength and resistance to bending under the load of a large fish. The hooks are corrosion-treated for use in both freshwater and saltwater environments. Salt and brackish estuary water oxidises bare carbon steel rapidly, dulling the point and weakening the wire. The corrosion treatment maintains point sharpness and structural integrity across repeated sessions in saltwater without requiring freshwater rinsing after every use.
